Good Morning Cardwell Researchers,
Went to the archives yesterday and dug up a couple of gems. I'll do them
in separate post to keep the threads straight.
On the group of Cardwells that were in Stokes County, NC it appears that
Thomas Cardwell and his wife Mary Joyce moved to the area and was later
followed by William Cardwell. Everything is leaning towards them as
being the sons of John Cardwell and Keziah Low. In reviewing my notes
after i got home I noticed that the majority of the work on John and
Keziah does not list any information on son William. Well, I think that
I've found some "new" stuff!
From the Stokes County Court of Pleas and Quarter on 14 June 1815
"Administration on the Estate of William Cardwell, dec'd is granted to
William Golding who entered into bond with Isaac Dalton, Hampton Bryum &
Bartlett Shipp in $7000 and qualified. Ordered that the said Adm'r be
authorized to make sale of the personal property of said William
Cardwell."
On the same day...
"Thomas T. Armstrong is appointed Guardian to Wiltshire Cardwell, John
Cardwell, William Cardwell, Francis Cardwell, children of William
Cardwell, dec'd who entered into four bonds with Charles Banner,
Bartlett Shipp & James Martin in each bond in the sum of $1500 in each
bond."
There are also several records on Mary "Patty" Grubb that had a bastard
child from William Cardwell. She received a 100 pound settlement and
then two additional 10 pound settlements from his estate after his
death. Just wondering if anyone has any Grubbs that might be able to tie
into this.
So from these records we can determine....
William Cardwell died in Stokes County, NC around June 14, 1815
He had minor children, but not wife was listed, at the time of his
death.
1. Wiltshire Cardwell - he is the first name NOT listed in the
continuing records on this guardianship. This would indicate that he
became of age by the 1820 records.
2. John Cardwell - he is the second name NOT listed. This would indicate
that he became of age by 1822.
3. William Cardwell - still listed as minor in 1822 (that is as far as I
got in the P&Q minutes)
4. Francis Cardwell - still listed as minor in 1822
5. Bastard child of Mary "Patty" Grubb born in 1813.
There is a very strong probability that William Golding, who was the
adminstrator of his estate, is a son-in-law. There is a marriage record
in Stokes County for Keziah Cardwell to William Golding on 4 Feb 1813.
Given the fact that Keziah is the name of John Cardwells wife and that
William Golding served as the administrator of William's estate I
strongly believe that William is the son of John and Keziah Low
Cardwell. We also know that John and Keziah's son William was living out
of the state of Virginia from1800-1810 when there was several lawsuits
pertaining to John's estate. Thomas T. Armstrong that was the guardian
of his minor children might be a son-in-law also though I haven't found
a marriage record that would link him to the family.
There is a possibility that the minor William is the following;
William Sands Cardwell 1801-1879 born in NC. Lived in Giles County, TN
from at least 1834 (birth of child). He married Mariah P. Russell.
The minor Wiltshire Cardwell grew up and married Rachel A. Moore on 22
June 1834 in Stokes County, NC.
Let's chew on that for a while!
Later,
Rand Cardwell
