Hi Rand,
I have spoken with you before trying to make a connection to the
Georgia
Cardwell's.
There was a Simon Cardwell that migrated from Campbell County, VA to
Georgia... I believe that he had a son named John. Simon was born around
the end of the Rev. War to Robert Cardwell and his 1st wife known only
as Meams. If memory serves me there was a John in GA that served in the
War of 1812... maybe a good source of records. Have you checked the
deeds in the counties that you mentioned for clues to William "Grubb's"
kinsmen.
Also the possibility could exist that he is the bastard child mentioned
in the Stokes County, NC records. Mary Grubb could have had the child in
1806, but waited until 1813 to take the case to court. I wouldn't
totally rule this out! Especially if the GA Cardwell leads deadend.

Well, my ancestor, William Cardwell from Georgia (Troup county)
was born in 1806. (Not really sure where!) He married Sarah McCluskey
in
Troup Co. in 1833 and moved to Alabama. He had a son, also named
William,
born 1842, that had the nickname of "Grubb" all of his life. I am not
sure
where William Sr. was born, it is believed his family was from North
Carolina but, as yet, haven't made the link. Must be a connection
there
somewhere!
