I've been looking for my grandfather Charles Worthington Odell's
ancestor, Mary Austin CARDWELL (or Eliza Jane CARDWELL) that
married a W. V. Compton. Their daughter Alice Laura Compton was
my greatgrandmother and I have notes that show her birth as 1871
in Strawberry Plains, Jefferson County, TN.
I am also posting some CARDWELL data found in "TN Cousins, A
History of Tennessee People" by Worth S. Ray, Reprinted by
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore 1984. This book was
originally published in Austin, Texas.
"p. 188 GRAINGER COUNTY, TENNESSEE
Other persons of genealogical interest who were among first
settlers in RUTLEDGE, Tennessee, were as follows: (typist note:
some names not retyped here)
DANIEL CARDWELL and HUGH JONES, who were "hatters".
and on
"p. 224 KNOX COUNTY, TENNESSEE
Another small graveyard in which are the graves of the CARDWELL
and ROGERS familiy, is only a short distance from the SHIPE
burying ground, and both are only a short distance from the old
BETHLEHAM CHURCH."
and on
"p. 768 WEAKLEY COUNTY TENNESSEE
COL. JOHN A. GARDNER stood at the head of his profession as a
lawyer in Weakley County for a number of years. Emerson
Ethebridge, Hon. M. D. Cardwell and COL. JOHN A. ROGERS also were
among top lawyers."
Hope this is helpful to someone.
