Dear Miss Nantes,
I am descended from the same Cardwell line you come from. I show that Thomas and
Martha Perrin Cardwell had about eight children, one being John who married Keziah
Lowe, and another being your Ellen, which I have as Martha Eleanor. This info
came from Allen Pendergraft of Mesa, Az, originally, about ten or twelve years
ago. Since then I have pretty well confirmed his info with several other
sources. Are you aware of the siblings of Ellen? I will be happy to give you
what I have about them.

My CARDWELL line beigns with Thomas CARDWELL, born 1614 in Wiltshire,
England. He married Mary__________(born in Shropshire, England). We only
know of one child, Thomas CARDWELL, jnr, born 1660 in Middlesex County,
Virginia.
Thomas CARDWELL, jnr, married Ann BASSETT, reputedly a Powhatan Indian, in
1681 in Middlesex County, Virginia. They had, as far as we know, only Thomas
CARDWELL III, no known birth-date, born in New Kent County, Virginia, dying
1751 in Cumberland County, Virginia.
Thomas CARDWELL III married Martha PERRIN in 1711 in Henrico County, Virginia.
They had one daughter, as far as we know, named Ellen CARDWELL, no known
birth-date, born in Henrico County, Virginia. My CARDWELL line "daughters
out" here with her marriage to James MENEES, snr, about 1737.
I would appreciate any help. THANK YOU !
Miss Dsire de Nantes

Rand, It took awhile but we did uncover some information on this family on
a recent trip through Patrick county VA and Stokes county NC. In the
library in Danbury we found a family history of the Joyce's. "God's Choice
Seed - The Joyces" was compiled by Corinne Johnson Murray. She goes back
to two brothers, Alexander and Thomas. Alexander bought land on the banks
of the Mayo River and lived there. Thomas bought land along the Mayo River
in Rockingham county and land around Crooked Creek in Stokes county.
Thomas, unlike Alexander, never lived in NC. He lived in Charlotte county,
VA until his death in 1780. An abstract of Thomas Joyce's will lists the
following children:
1. Alexander
2. John
3. Isaac
4. Mary Cardwell
5. Elizabeth Johnston
6. Sarah Marshall
7. Hannah Shipp
8. Ester
9. George
10. Andrew
A Thomas Cardwell was an Executor of the will.
Other interesting parts in the document:
Nancy Shipp (Daughter of Hannah Joyce Shipp) married Henry Pendelton
Gaines. Henry was the son of Thomas Gaines and Susannah Strother(these are
the parents of Fanny Gaines who married John Cardwell, son of Thomas).
Also another son, George Washington Gaines married Sarah Jane Joyce a
daughter of Andrew Joyce, youngest son of Thomas Joyce.
On the Thomas Cardwell line: We tried to find a paper trail to link our
John Cardwell to Thomas and Mary Joyce Cardwell but were unable to do it.
We did find a deed whereas Thomas Cardwell sold some property in Stokes
county to John but there was no gift to John as he had done to Perrin and
the two daughters.
