Maybe... just maybe... this is what I need your help with.... that
this
is the Thomas Cardwell that was born on 7 June 1761 to Richard A.
Cardwell (1719-1780) and Susannah LeGrand (1721-1813). The Daybook
that
was kept by Richard states "my son Thomas Cardwell went into the
servis
the 26th of May, 1779".
Just answered my own question......Charlotte County, VA , Court Orders,
Book 6, 1786-89, page 123, Sept. Court: "Susannah Cardwell came into
court and made oath that her son Daniel Cardwell is the elder brother of
and heir at law of Thomas Cardwell, a younger son who died a soldier in
the Army of the United States in Charleston, South Carolina in the year
1780.."
We know that Richard A. Cardwell died in 1780 his will was proven on
April 3, 1780. This must have been a matter to clear up any legal
tangles since Thomas was mentioned in his fathers will.
Thomas is also mentioned in the will of Richard.
There is reference to Thomas Cardwell being the husband of Mary Joyce
in
the will of Thomas Joyce in charolette Co.VA.
So we can conclude that the Thomas Cardwell that married Mary Joyce and
was alive in the early 1800s was not the son of Richard A. and Susannah
LeGrand Cardwell like he is sometimes listed.
I think it is safe to say that he is the son of one of Richard A.
Cardwells brothers; John, George and Thomas. Seems that the Cardwells
and the Joyces were in Charolette Co.VA during the 1700's.
Seems that there are a few young Thomas Cardwells in Virginia in the
late 1700's.
1. Thomas Cardwell that married Mary Joyce... no record of this marriage
exist. It is determined from the pension records of Mary's brother
Thomas Joyce. And will of Thomas Joyce, Sr.
2. Thomas Cardwell that married Mary A. Freeman in 1787 in Ameila
County, VA
3. Thomas Cardwell that married Mary Palmer - 1795 in Hailfax county,VA
I'm sure that there are a couple of more lurking around!!!!!!
Anyone, got a connection with the ones listed above?????
Or can place them with a particular family?
Anyone have any Joyce connections???
