Hi Patte,
I think that you contacted me some time ago concerning "this" Penelope. Given
the general lack of records this might end up being one of the unsolved mysteries of the
Cardwell family.
Let's take the approximate birth year of the Penelope in question. If she married in
1756 it would be safe to place her birth year at around 1736..... give or take a little.
That is guessing that she married at 20 years of age. Now, who could be her father based
on that assumption?
1. Her assocation with Francis Epperson and his wife, Martha Cardwell Epperson, show some
type of family connection with the Thomas Cardwell/Martha Perrin line.
2. Given the geographic location that she lived, Cumberland and Charlotte Counties, VA,
would center her with the Thomas Cardwell/Martha Perrin line. It is the same region that
their children lived and not associated with the other Cardwell group in the King &
Queen County area.
3. She isn't the daughter of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand. We already have
documentation on their daughter by the same name.
4. She isn't the daughter of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe. Their children were
documented in John's Will in Prince Edward County, VA in 1795. No daughter by the name
of Penelope is listed.
5. She "might" be the daughter of George Cardwell and Leticia LNU. I'm still
piecing that family together. I find this doubtful, but then there are some unanswered
question concerning the ages of this couple's children.
6. Thomas Perrin Cardwell, the fourth son of Thomas Cardwell and Martha Perrin, is another
possibility. We know very little concerning him other than the fact that he died in the
mid-1700s (I'm away from my notes and can't remember the year or the record). Most
researchers have claimed that he didn't marry or have children.
7. Another possibility is that she is a younger daugther of Thomas Cardwell and Martha
Perrin, but then we have the will of Thomas and there is no mention of Penelope. The
wording in the record you provided makes me think that there is a connection with Francis
Epperson's wife. Younger sister maybe? if so, then why isn't she living with her
parents, Thomas and Martha Perrin Cardwell?
8. The last possibility is that she is the daughter of a Cardwell woman and was born out
of wedlock. I've found this several times in researching the family in North Carolina
and Tennessee.
My guess is that she is a child of Thomas Perrin Cardwell or his brother, George Cardwell.
But, that is just a guess. Hopefully, something will turn up among the Anglea
researchers.
Best of luck and please keep us informed.

PS. Do you have a source for Ambrose being the middle name of Richard Cardwell? I've
yet to find any documentation on that name, but have seen it used repeatedly by several
researchers. Thanks.

I found a chancery record in Cumberland County that I am trying to
figure out. I have a Wood/Epperson line in Cumberland then Charlotte
County that intermarried with the Cardwell line and lived next to
William Anglea. Francis epperson deeded land to Bartlett Anglea in
Cumberland county. Francis Epperson married a Martha Cardwell
(supposedly Martha Perrin Cardwell, dtr of Thomas Cardwell and Martha
Perrin; which may have been a second marriage for Martha Perrin
Cardwell and they had three or four children I know of - Thomas
Epperson married Martha Cardwell, dtr of John Cardwell and Kezia Lowe
1778 in Charlotte Co. This is proved by Martha Cardwell Epperson's
pension application. Anne Epperson married William Atkins 1774 in
Charlotte County proved by marriage record.
Martha Epperson married Joseph Wood about 1766 possibly in Powhatan
County, no marriage found but direct family line information. There is
possibly a fourth child named Francis Epperson who appears in Charlotte
County.
Joseph Wood and Francis Epperson appear as a witness to the will of
William Anglea in Cumberland County in 1769.
The Chancery record mentions a Penelope Cardwell that Francis Epperson
"had the bringing up of." I am trying to figure out who this Penelope
Cardwell is. She would not be the daughter or Richard Ambrose Cardwell
as this Penelope Cardwell's marriage to William Anglea was in 1756 and
she was born 1757. William Anglea appears to be the son of the above
William Anglea who died in 1778. Any help would be appreciated.
Cumberland Co Chancery Record 1779-012
