Rand,
Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
One thought I have is that the Martha Cardwell who married Francis
Epperson could be the widow of a Cardwell. I have not actually found a
marriage record for a Francis Epperson to Martha. She is named on two
deeds however as the wife of Francis Epperson.

Hi Patte,
I think that you contacted me some time ago concerning "this"
Penelope. Given the general lack of records this might end up being
one of the unsolved mysteries of the Cardwell family.
Let's take the approximate birth year of the Penelope in question. If
she married in 1756 it would be safe to place her birth year at around
1736..... give or take a little. That is guessing that she married at
20 years of age. Now, who could be her father based on that > assumption?
1. Her assocation with Francis Epperson and his wife, Martha Cardwell
Epperson, show some type of family connection with the Thomas
Cardwell/Martha Perrin line.
2. Given the geographic location that she lived, Cumberland and
Charlotte Counties, VA, would center her with the Thomas
Cardwell/Martha Perrin line. It is the same region that their children
lived and not associated with the other Cardwell group in the King &
Queen County area.
8. The last possibility is that she is the daughter of a Cardwell
woman and was born out of wedlock. I've found this several times in
researching the family in North Carolina and Tennessee.
My guess is that she is a child of Thomas Perrin Cardwell or his
brother, George Cardwell. But, that is just a guess. Hopefully,
something will turn up among the Anglea researchers.
Best of luck and please keep us informed.
