Hello Gang;
Here is more on the same line I sent yesterday:
At the bottom of the last entries about the Robert (Robin) Cardwell
family, there is the following statement:" Anthony C., great
grandfather, died in 1891 at the home of John Madison Cardwell at 95
years.
In the National Portrait Gallery in London, there is a portrait of
Edward Cardwell (Viscount Cardwell) of Liverpool, a direct descendant of
the Cardwells of Netherton, Yorkshire, England. Viscount Cardwell in
1824 was Sec. of war for Great Britian and a member of Parliament."
There is a copy of letter in this material;
"Dear Mrs.Canrud,
I, Lou Ann Thompson was born in Calhoun County, Mississippi, second
child of John Goodlow Thompson and Betty Foster Cardwell ( born
Northport Alabama Nov. 15, 1854)). Betty was the first child of John
Foster Cardwell and Georgeana McLester Cardwell.( Betty was married in
Slate Springs, Miss.). John Foster was the oldest child of James
Cardwell. Elizabeth Foster Cardwell was born Feb.2,1829(Civil war record
CO.C. 3rd Miss.Inf.Reg.CSA). Other children in this family were:
Margarite, Henry (whom I knew), Elizabeth, Lou, Julia, Sallie, Martha,
and Melissa. Tradition is that James Cardwell gave John Foster some land
and slaves and he and his wife are buried close to their home in
Alabama.
Family records claim that James Cardwell came from Tennessee. I have it
that this line came from Perrin Cardwell b in Tenn. and that he came
from Virginia... This Perrin Cardwell, a young Virginian of 17 years was
at the surrender of Cornwallis. When 21 years of age he married
Elizabeth Worsham aged 14. This young family lived in Amelia County,
Virginia until 1811 went down the river to Knoxville, Tenn. In 1835 he
was given a land grant in Tenn. This young couple raised a family of 16
children. Perrin lived to be 90 years old and Elizabeth 94. Only a few
of their children's names are known.( Martha came in on a son William's
name.), Perrin II Ky, Daniel, Thomas, and George ( youngest ). These six
children scattered in every direction. It is possible that my great
grand father, was one of Perrin's sons, or grandson by one of the older
sons. The names of James' children were common among those in Tenn. The
first Cardwell from England was named James, then the names Martha,
Elizabeth have come down to the present genreration
..
John Foster Cardwell and a small family ( Betty, Charles, Sally ) went
to Calhoun County, Miss when Sally was a baby. Later Amanda ( named for
Gorgeana's mother - Amanda Martindale ) and Martha Virginia were born at
--?-near Slate Springs, Miss. Here (the letter doesn't say who ) many
years ago married Robert Thompson, ( ---?--brother ?) of John, who
married Betty Foster. These two families, in 1884, April, went to Texas.
Later these two brothers were "cattle kings" of Indian Territory though
their families lived in Texas.
My aunt Mrs. Gaston has her parent's bible and I have the newspaper
obituaries of John Foster and Georgiana McLester.
