I have been researching Leonard H Cardwell who settles in Smith or

sisters.
If you know any information on this individual I would appreciate it.
Leonard Hendersen or Henton Cardwell born in North Carolina in 1809
according to the 1850 Census. He was also the executor of John G.
Cardwell's
will dated 1843 in Smith County TN.
Hello all!
I haven't been very active lately on this list, but I had to respond to
this note even though I'm afraid I don't have much definite information
to offer--this Leonard Henton/Hinton Cardwell (there were others later)
was my great great grandfather!
Let me try to sum up what little information I have.
Leonard Henton Cardwell, b. ABT 1809 (age 41 in 1850 census), d. 1875 TN
Family tradition had it that Leonard had a sister Charlotte Cardwell who
was married to a John Drake, and that his (Leonard's) parents were John
Cardwell and Susan Warn, but I have found no confirmation of this, and
family tradition has been very wrong on other things this far back in
time (for instance, Leonard H. Cardwell was supposed to have been born
1814 in Belfast, Ireland!).
In all likelyhood there is a connection with the Cardwells that came to
the Smith Co, TN area from Granville Co, NC, but I haven't pinned down
the exact relationships.
One possibility is that Leonard H. Cardwell was the son of a Thomas
Nelson Cardwell, a brother of the 4 Cardwell brothers that came to Smith
Co from Granville Co, NC in the early 1800's. I believe this info is
from an article by Edward L. Thackston in the book "Smith Co. History"
although I don't have a copy (If anyone would be willing to make a copy
and send it to me, I would be glad to pay for the costs!). Apparently
there is some question as to the reliability of the info in this article
which I believe is based on the research of Alan Pendergraft, so this
needs to be looked into. I wish I had more spare time!
In any case, glad to see the interest in Smith Co, TN Cardwells. Maybe
this will get me going again, too.
