I am a new subscriber to the Cardwell list and I am looking for the
Cardwell branch of my husband's family. This is the branch I know
the least about and was very happy to find this listserv.
My husband's grandmother Rebecca Cummings Hinton died in 1925 in
Webster Co., KY. On her death certificate it lists Jane Cardwell as
her mother and Enoch Cummings as her father.
I found Enoch and Jane in the 1850 census of Sumner Co., TN. They
have 6 children at that time. Jane was supposed to be born in
1819/20 in KY. In the 1860 TN census Enoch's wife is listed as
Levilla? (same age as Jane) but I believe this is a mistake by the
census taker. There are 2 more children. Jane Cardwell Cummings
appears again in the 1900 KY census for Webster Co. where she is
listed as grandmother (so I'm assuming she hadn't died before the
1860 census).
Sorry if this is confusing but obviously, depending on where you get
your info, this woman could be called Jane or Levilla.
There is also a Confederate infantry group from Sumner Co, TN that
has, I believe, one of Jane's sons in it and her future son-in-law.
There are also Cardwells in this group that I am assuming may be
related but I'm not sure how.
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
