Gary,
Seems I have too many irons in the fire of late to keep up with my e-mail,
but trust that I do eventually get back to it.
Within the month I am hoping to make a trip to the Northwest Archives in
Seattle where I will check the Douglas Co. census for 1850 and 1860 as you
suggest; and the 1850 and 1860 Iowa census, as Rand suggested. Certainly
does seem like there could be a connection between James A. Cardwell and
George Washington Cardwell.
My best to everyone,
Sharon in WA State

Sharon;
I still think this James A. Cardwell is either a younger brother of
George Washington Cardwell or a son. He would fit nicely between Thomas
b. 1835 and Julian b. 1838. The theory sounds good but I have a census
record for George W. when he was in Cedar TWP Van Buren Co. Il in 1850
and there was no James with the family but Julian was not shown with
them then either and I'm pretty sure of him as a child of George W.
The census doesn't really prove he is not one of the family as I have
found other relatives counted by the census in households other than
those of their parents. Have you tried the Douglas County, Or. census
for 1850 and 1860?
I will still check as I told you before and let you know if I find
anything.
Regards,
Gary
