Hi! My name is Karen Anne Cardwell. This is the first time I have ever
submitted to this list.
Here is some of the information I have:
William Cardwell:
Born in Virginia around 1783.
He had a son (William) born in Newcastle, KY, 16 Aug 1817.
He is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census for Hamblin Township, Brown
County, IND.
In the "History of Henry County Kentucky" I found a listing for the
marriage of Cardwell, Wm. to Johnson, Polly 06-24-1810
In the "Brown County, Indiana - Early Marriage Records - 1836-1859"
I found the following marriages:
Cardwell, Katharine - Jesse Duncan - March 1, 1838
Cardwell, Mary - Amos Hicks - December 22, 1842
Cardwell, Thomas - Julia Ann Gilespie - December 19,1844
Cardwell, Thomas S. - Lutisha Jane Hemphill - January 14, 1851
Cardwell, William - Sarah Ann Sparks - January 14, 1838
Now, for William Cardwell's son William:
Born in Newcastle, KY, 16 Aug 1817.
Married Sarah A. Sparks in Brown County, Ind (died Jun 8, 1867).
Married Mrs. Susan Stone, widow of Solomon Stone, 16 Aug 1870.
In the "History of Kansas" I found the following:
W.A.CARDWELL, minister, Lecompton, came to the State in 1855, and
settle in Big Springs, and engaged in preaching, and as all pioneer
preachers had to do, worked on a farm during the week. He was born
in Newcastle, Ky., August 16, 1817, and was set apart as a minister
of the United Brethren Church of White Chapel, Wayne Co., Ind., 1842.
While on his way to an appointment near Brownville he was shot at by
a rebel for his patriotic and Union sentiments and taken prisoner;
no fewer than seven guns were leveled at him before he surrendered.
Mr. Cardwell has been twice married. In Brown County, Ind., to Miss
Sarah A. Sparks, who died June 8, 1867. Also, August 16, 1870, to
Mrs. Susan Stone, widow of Solomon Stone. He is the father of eighteen
children, twelve of whom are living --George E., John T, Mattie M.E.,
Dennis A., James R., Samuel S., Milton W., Ely H., Rhoda, Jno. E.,
Laura A. and Nora M.
I am a decendent of Dennis A. Cardwell.
Is anyone else working on this Cardwell line? If so, please contact me.
