Interesting information! Do you have a good theory as to the father of
John
CARDWELL of Claiborne County, TN?
Hey Frank,
Everything is pointing to John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN being the
son of George Cardwell of Cumberland County, VA. That makes his siblings
the Rev. Perrin Cardwell of Knox County, TN; Francis Cardwell of Virginia;
William Cardwell of Virginia; Richard Cardwell of Virginia; and Thomas
Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN.
It appears that George died when the majority of his children were still
minors. Several were taken into the home of John Netherland. We know that
John and his oldest son Perrin (named for his Uncle) show up in Claiborne
Co.,TN around 1801/2 by examination of the county records. John establishes
a farm on Lone Mountain and raises his family until his death around 1824
(not looking at my notes, but that is close). In 1810 John buys the land
for Thomas Cardwell at the mouth of Ball Creek on the Clinch River in
Claiborne County. Around 1815 the Rev. Perrin Cardwell and his family move
into Grainger County,TN (that is the other side of the Clinch River) A
couple of Perrin's sons remain in Grainger Co., but Perrin moves to Knox
Co.,TN (the next couty to the south of Grainger) around 1820 and lives there
the rest of his life. It appears that Thomas lives well into in 90s, but
dies before the 1850 census. Richard, William and Francis (the other
brothers) seem to have all remained in Virginia.
The picture of these particular Cardwell brothers is slowly starting to come
together for me after several years of reseach on this line. Granted, there
is little documentation on this line YET, but what I have points to the
conclusions above.
Hope that helps,
Rand Cardwell
