Hello Grace,
Couple of counter-questions about Elizabeth. Do you know of the date (or
good guess) of when she married James Vernon.... and location. As can guess
the name Elizabeth is very common and there were a couple in the right time
period.
The Thomas Cardwell that you mention (associated with George Joyce) is the
son of John Cardwell and Keziah Low(e). He married Mary (sister of George
Joyce) Can you give me details to the Thomas that served with Capt. Veron
in the Rev. War (specifics please as I don't have this information in my
database) Also, this particular Thomas had a sister named Elizabeth (born
ca-1754) that married William Nichols in Charlotte County, VA. William was
killed in the Rev. War. She might have married Vernon after the death of
her first husband.
The Cardwell and Joyce families intermarried in at least two lines. One
being the family of Richard Perrin Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand and also in
the family of John Cardwell and Keziah Low(e) <they were brothers>. Both
lines had several sons that fought for the Revoluntion.
Hope that I can match you up, but need more info.
Sincerely,
Rand Cardwell
I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Cardwell who married
James Vernon.
(See
below). She was probably the daughter or sister of Thomas Cardwell
who
served
under Capt. Richard Vernon in the Rev. War. The Joyce-Cardwell-Vernon
families
lived near each other and intermarried.
Thanks on any leads you can provide.

George Joyce was born 25 Oct 1759 VA and died 15 Sep 1835 Bullitt Co, KY.
He
entered service in Charlotte Co, VA 7 June 1759 as a private under
Capt.Henry
King. In Jan or Feb of 1781 he moved part of his property to the part
of
Guilford
Co that later became Rockingham Co, NC. He was preparing to move his
family, with
the help of his brother in Charlotte Co, to NC when he heard that
Genl.
Nathaniel
Greene had been forced to retreat from Ninety Six, SC, to Jennings
Ferry on
theDan
River in Virginia. He made arrangements with his brother to move his
family
while
he entered a rifle company under Capt. Wm. Morse. He was in the Battle
of
Guilford
Courthouse in 1781. He was discharged some time later. Again in
1781,he
served in
a company of Light Horse under Capt. Richard Vernon and also served in
an
expedition against the Cherokee Indians under Capt. John Leak in the
regiment of
Maj. Joseph Cloud.
George Joyce moved from Rockingham Co, NC to Bullitt Co, KY in 1806. His
discharge
papers were left with his
brother-in-law, Thomas Cardwell. George Joyce applied for a pension in
Bullitt Co,
KY 17 Aug 1835 and died one month later.
