Hey Gang,
I've noticed a couple of post about the Smith County, TN groups. I've not
done much research on this line, but I can hopefully point some folks in
the right direct. (Just let me know what you find out)<grin>
The info I have points to the majority of the Cardwells that migrated to
Smith Co. TN came from Granville Co., NC.
The 1820 Smith County census list two families;
Anderson Cardwell - pg 49 - 00001-201
Caleb Cardwell - pg 49 - 20001-201
Now there was a Thomas Cardwell that was living in Granville Co.NC by
1786 when he first shows up in county records. He dies in May 1800 and
has a will that was probated. He had several children, among them a
Anderson and Caleb.... hummmmmmmmm.
It would appear that by the 1830 census a couple of more of Thomas
Cardwell's sons moved to the area.
We can still find Anderson Cardwell. I think that Caleb may have died and
his widow is listed as Fenelon L. Cardwell, but this is just a guess.
Also John G. Cardwell shows up. THomas of Granville had a son named John,
but I currently have him grouped with the Sumner County, TN groups.
Leonard Cardwell can also be found and it is known that Thomas had a son
named Leonard and he married Lucy Strum in Granville Co.NC on 18 Dec
1802. Hummmmmmmmmmm.
So what does this all point to? I think that a solid link can be made to
the Smith Co.,TN groups and Thomas Cardwell of Granville Co.,NC. It just
needs more research done to prove all the lines.
Hope this helps.
LAter,
Rand Cardwell
