Hi
I have a book "Smith Co. History" that states 1st Cardwell in Smith Co.
was John G. (on jury by 1808). By 1820 he was joined by Anderson & Caleb
and their families - 19 in all. By 1830 J. Leonard Cardwell had arrived.
The article indicates that these 4 were brothers, all sons of Thomas
Cardwell, b. c1743, raised in Pr. Edward Co.,VA, but moved to Granville
Co., NC by 1785, where he died in 1800.
Thomas was son of John (c1721-1795), who was the son of Thomas
(c1685-1751), who was the son of Thomas (c1660-c1717), who was the son of
Thomas (c1615-1689), who came to VA in 1636. He was the son of Wm.
Cardwell of Lancashire, England. Starting with the first Thomas, who
settled in Middlesex Co., VA, the Cardwells moved successively westward -
to Henrico Co., to Cumberland Co., and to Pr. Edward Co. The article
goes on to list desc. of John G. and J(onathan) Leonard. The article
was written by Edward L. Thackston, presumably a resident of Smith Co.
Hope this helps!
