I think that my husband's relative, Jane Cardwell b. ca.1819 and
married to Enoch Cummings, is the daughter of Nelson Cardwell
and Nancy Hughes married in 1816 in Sumner Co. TN.
I suspected that Nelson was living in Simpson Co. KY over the
border from Sumner Co. for the 1840 census. However, I only
found someone named Nelson Caldwell. I think that the census -
taker made a mistake on the last name and I think I have some
proof to back this up.
I've found the Cardwell/Caldwell problem numerous times in record transcription.
It is a common mistake. The fact that you've found Nelson Cardwell listed on the Tax
List helps to substaniate that it was indeed Nelson Cardwell rather than Caldwell.
There is also a Dudley Cardwell listed in 1843
that is probably his son.
Do you have an age for Dudley? The Cardwell group from Granville Co.NC that moved to
the Sumner/Smith County, TN Region included several brothers. Among them were Anderson,
Dudley, John, Thomas and William Nelson Cardwell. Dudley and Anderson move on to Illinois
by 1850, I believe that is correct as I'm not near my notes.
It looks to me like Nelson remarried in 1835 after being listed as a
Widower in his church membership records. There was also a
widow listed named Polly Bennett. There is a marriage record for
a Nelson Cardwell and Polly Bennett in 1835 in Sumner Co.TN.
After remarrying he probably moved to Simpson Co. KY.
In the 1860 Simpson Co. Ky census there is a Perrian Cardwell
listed as a son of what would most likely be one of Nelson
Cardwell's sons. I will look into this further.
That is very interesting since the name Perrin does not show up in the Smith/Sumner
clan and provides a possible clue to the line linking to the known Virginia root families.
Please advise when you discover any additional info.
Later,
