Hey Kay,
1850 Rockingham County, NC Census has Sarah Cardwell age 48 born in VA
listed with the following children; (Husband Richard had died in January)
Margaret - 18
Matilda - 14
James - 12
Wm. - 9
John - 6

Yes.... who do you think was listed in more than one?

You are correct. I don't think that they had reproductive clinics or
frozen sperm samples back then!!! <grin> I still think that Richard Ivan
Cardwell is the son of one of Richard and Sarah's daughters
out-of-wedlock (evidence points to Matilda). That the grandmother(Sarah)
helped to raise him before Matilda moved on to Missouri. Just my humble
opinion.

I just don't think that it would say "Unknown" given the time! Plus look
at all the other supporting documents you've got about Matilda not having
a husband!!!!

Hi Patsy & Walt,
I am from Webster Co MO (currently living in New Orleans) and my gggf married
John or Thomas (I am at work and cannot recall which) Cardwell's daughter
Mary in Roane Co c1825. They all left and settled in Webster Co.
I was just home this past week and stopped at the Panther Valley Cemetry
where most of the Cardwells and Ewings are buried....I took several pictures
of headstones......
I am hoping to find the father and mother of Joseph (sr) who married Mary
Cardwell.

I have some intersting info on this line and have worked with a couple of
folks in helping research it. I agree that the "line" in the newspaper
article does not add up with known families.
I also have a copy of a lawsuit that involved John while he was still in
Roane County, TN. In it several Cardwell men are listed by name as
character references. I feel that this points to kinship with the listed
men, but have yet to research it out. I'll get you a transcribed copy
later (in a hurry right now).
While still in NC and VA the Cardwells, Gaines and Joyce families
intermarried pretty heavy for a couple of generations. John's wife is
mentioned in the will of Thomas Gaines in Stokes County (I have a copy of
it somewhere in my files).
Hope this gets the ball rolling.

Hello!
I'm a newcomer to the Cardwell list and wanted to let everyone know who I'm
researching. My gr-gr-gr grandfather was Isaac Cardwell, b. ca. 1827 in
Whitley Co., KY. He married his wife, Joanna GALE, 25 Dec. 1855 in Owsley
Co., KY. I know they had a daughter Lena, who m. Samuel B. FOX ca. 1878,
probably in Madison Co., KY. Lena and Samuel later moved to California.
Isaac and Joanna Cardwell probably also had a daughter named Florence. I
don't know the names of any other siblings, but haven't done a whole lot of
research on this line yet.
Are any other Cardwell researchers familiar with this family?

It is Richard Ivan who is listed twice in 1860
Grainger and Union

What was Peter A son's (Richard) wife's maiden name?
Richard Ivan married Elvira Acuff and in some letter that is in my
stuff, it said that Richard worked with her family. Does she have a
mother or aunt named Sarah or Sally?
Just hard to believe that Matilda had a kid at 13 but it is possible. As
we all know.
By the way, what do you think of this version of Reddick?: RHEDRICK
Thanks
Kay
Rand and All
Do you remember if Caroline "Matilda" Cardwell was in Rockingham NC
census 1850?
And is it possible for the same person to be in more than one census in
the same year?
1860 Union - I remember that Richard Ivernson which we know as Richard
Ivan is living with Sarah (J. Crowder) Cardwell age 55. Richard is
listed as being age 8. Can't be Richard M son, he died Jan 1850
1860 Grainger - Rhedrick, Albert 22 - this is Alfred Reddick
Matilda 23 - this is Caroline Matilda
Richard 09 - this is Richard Ivan
William 04 - this is William Henderson
Florence 02 - this is Florence who m Monroe
(Albert S J is not born yet)
in 1870 census Richard I. is living with Richard and Sariah (Peter A
son)
This is driving me nutso - all because of Richard's death cert saying
that father is Richard Cardwell and mother is Sally (Sarah) Acuff
Can anyone shed some light or some wisdom - where should I look now?
Thanks
Kay
Hello Cardwell Researchers,
My wife and I are researching her Cardwell line. The only thing we really
know for sure is her ancestery back to her G-G-Grandfather John Cardwell.
John Cardwell (b.13 Mar 1777) married Fanny Gaines in Stokes Co, NC 28 Nov
1801. They soon moved across the state line to Patrick Co, VA. From there
they moved to Roane Co.,TN and finally to Webster Co, MO. I received info
from a Cardwell researcher,Joe Evans, which indicated John Cardwell was the
1st son of Thomas LeGrand Cardwell. He sent me the rest of the ancestery
which I will post.
Three years ago we (my wife and I) took a trip to the MO area and found a
article in the local library which had been written about John and Fanny
Cardwell. The article was "Early Settlers of Webster Co, MO.". I will
quote some of the Article:
The following is a portion of the article:
"The Cardwell Family" September 7, 1905......
"John Cardwell's father was Thomas Cardwell who with his brother came to
Virginia from Ireland many years before the Revolution. He settled in
Stokes County, Virginia on the Dan river, where he lived until his death
several years after the colonies had become states. Both Thomas and his
brother were soldiers in the war for freedom."
"John Cardwell was born in 1772. He had one brother who remained in
Virginia when John and his young wife moved to Roane County, Tennessee.
Here his children were born and here he lived until 1833, when he moved to
Missouri settling in Laclede County near Cave Spring....etc."
This seems to be contradictory of what the info Joe Evans gave me. Can
anybody shed some light on this for us? Has anybody heard of our John
Cardwell?
I have more detailed info than what I am posting and would glad to share if
others would like.
Thanks,

Does anyone have a Richard Cardwell and Sally (Sarah) Acuff married to

Gary and others,
I just love it when something makes a light go off in my dim mind!!!!
I'd been working on and off on a Cardwell line that shows up in West
Tennessee and then moves into Arkansas. Hopefully this may provide some
insight into the this family group. Here goes.
In the 1830 census of Carroll County, Tennessee
Perrin Cardwell and family b. 1770-80 /wife b. 1790-1800 - 7 kids
living right next door is
Richard Cardwell and family b.1780-90 /wife b.1790-1800 - 6 kids
They do not show up in the 1840 Carroll County Census, BUT an interesting
record in the Carroll County Court Minutes can be found......
It appears that George and Paran Cardwell did not pay their taxes in
1839. They are both listed as "removed".
They "removed" to Green County, Arkansas were they can be found in the
1840 census.
It appears that Perrin b.1770-80 has died and his widow Catherine b. 1782
is listed as Head of Household. Five children are still living with her.
I "think" that their son Perrin b.1815-20 is living next door. He married
Elizabeth Ann Stone in Carroll County, TN on 19 Jan 1839.
Richard Cardwell b. 1780-90 is living close also. It appears that he is
widowed and still has 5 children at home.
Living next to him is George Cardwell b. ca 1820 who I think is the
oldest son of Richard.
Being that the Carroll County records state George and Paran Cardwell
might point that Richard had already made the move to Arkansas. His
oldest son George may have stayed behind to finish harvest, etc with
Perrin and family.
Now this gets us to the 1850 census in Green County, Arkansas in which we
get a little better data. In it we find that the widow Catherine Cardwell
was born in 1782 in NC. Still living with her are the children; Richard
b.1828 TN; Rebecca b.1832 TN; George b. 1830 TN
I do not have the other records for that census, but do know that Richard
Cardwell was still living (listed on pg 197) and also a Richard Cardwell,
JR (pg. 191).
I feel that this Perrin (there are so many men of that name) is the son
of Perrin b.1752 and Sarah Cleary Cardwell. That the Richard and family
that tags along with him is his younger brother b. 1785.
Please if anyone can expand on these lines do so.
Later,
Rand Cardwell
PS. I working on memory only on this one.... but it seems that a George
and Richard show up together in the early tax list of Roane County, TN
while it still extended to what became Putnam County, TN. We know that
George b.1787 settled in this area... so it might be that brother Richard
came there before moving on to Carroll County to link up with Perrin!!!

Katie and I will be leaving Friday the 20th to go to two family reunions
and my 55th high school reunion so if someone tries to contact me and
you do not get an answer be patient with me and I'll contact you when we
return . We will be in Jacksonville,Or.for the second reunion and there
were some of the Cardwells who settled in that area in the mid 1800s so
we may do some research on them while we are there .
Steven sent me a GEDCOM file last week and ,as I am new to computers and
genealogy both ,by the time I figured out how to get it out of this
"Simple ,User Friendly" monster the blue smoke was really rising above
my den. I've had less trouble training a new saddle horse than I've had
with this thing . Even teen age grandchildren are more responsive to
what I ask of them .
Hope I find some new and exciting stuff to share with you while we are
in J-Ville.
Gary
Rand or Gary,
Could you please e-mail me the list of Perrin Cardwell's children that was on
a recent query, posted by Gary. Accidently deleted it by mistake. Still
looking for info on the Smith Co. TN Cardwell's - John G. & Sarah (Sally)!

The above two addresses are good sources for other lists you might be
interested in joining or if someone asks you for list info. File it away
in a safe place.
They aren't the only places to find lists - if you know of a good URL
that you want to share - send it!
I would love to find an internet source for county boundery outlines and
the names of the counties. Anybody seen this?
It is your input that makes these lists work! Have a good weekend.

Gary,
I have some info on these two (along with tons on other Tennessee
Cardwell families). Just interested in how you made the connection
between George and his father Perrin in North Carolina. Also isn't
George's brother Perrin in same Perrin Cardwell that fought at the Battle
of King's Mountain in the Rev. War?
I'll have to dig around later, but I believe that I may have some info on
the elder Perrin of Virginia.

Thought I would share this. Non related to genealogy.
My son, 4, reminded me recently that what we say and do really can
impact there sponge like minds.
I love to drive - lived in NYC 10 years - need I say more about how I
drive. (Never had a traffic ticket) I talk to the drivers, alot.
So, Benjamin, while sitting in his car seat in the front passenger side
sees a driver pull their car in front of me without much notice, he
flings his hands and arms out and says, "hey lady were do you think you
are going?"
So humbling...
I have another "wanted man" to add to the list . Perrin Cardwell b.abt
1728 Henrico, Va. I have no name for his wife other than just Mrs.
Perrin Cardwell . He had a son named Perrin b.1752 Rowan , N.C. m.Sarah
Cleary b. abt 1754 Rowan N.C.
Children:
1.Perrin b.abt 1778 Rockingham N.C.
2.Thomas b.abt 1780 Rockingham N.C.
3.Richard b.1785 Rockingham N.C.
4.George b.1787 Rockingham N.C. d.aft1870 Cookeville , Putnam , Tn m.
Avis Bishop 20 Dec 1808 .
I have recently gotten information on his decendants and ancestors but
need to know who his wife was and the names of the rest of his children.
Thank you ,
