Hi, Gail !
A few months after Hubert Leroux's death in 1681, Anne-Marie Vanzègue (a widow with
three children: Anne-Charlotte, Jean (Baptiste) and Jeanne) married to Gabriel Cardinal,
21, son for Simon Cardinal and Michelle Garnier.
A son was born to them in 1683, and was baptized under the name of "Jean
Cardinal", the same name as his uncle Jean, Gabriel's brother.
Gabriel Cardinal and Anne-Marie Vanzègue's marriage lasted for only ten years. The
three Leroux children, having lived with Gabriel Cardinal, were sometimes called Leroux
dit Cardinal, and only a few of the descendants of Jean-Baptiste Leroux were said to be
"dit Cardinal", because of their sharing of Gabriel Cardinal's life for 10
years.
Many descendants of Jean-Baptiste Leroux were said "dit Rousson", probably
because Jean-Baptiste worked for François le Verrier de Rousson, who was a commanding
officer of a militia stationed at Lachine around 1708, and a major of the troops in
Montreal later.
The few "Leroux dit Cardinal-Rousson" related to Simon and Michelle of Montreal
are not to be confused with the "Leroux dit Cardinal" living in the same years
in Quebec City, neither with a branch of that family who established in Sorel under the
name "Leroux dit Provencal", or the "Leroux dit l'Enseigne" who
were living in Batiscan.
I hope these infos to be helpful... Have a great day.!
