From what I've learned, the Cardinal name has two sources. The
first is Jean LeRoux and his wife, Jeanne LeBlanc, who came from Senille in the Poitou
Region of France. Their son, Francois, born in 1636 in Senille, was a Carignan Soldier of
the King who came to New France (Canada) and married Marie Renaud,(Filles due Roi)
"daughter of the King")in Quebec on Oct. 25, 1668. Francois died at the Hotel
Dieu in Quebec on October 20, 1691. The LeRoux name was used until his descendant, Jean
Louis LeRoux's( & Marie Therese Belanger) son, Louis was born in Yamaska in 1768
when he was baptized as Louis Cardinal. Thereafter, the names Cardinal and Cardinal dit
LeRoux were used.
The 2nd Jean LeRoux was born in Montreal on Dec. 2, 1678 to Hubert LeRoux dit Rousson and
Anne-Marie Phanseque. Following Hubert's death in 1681, Anne-Marie married Gabriel
Cardinal and their children were known as LeRoux sit Rousson, LeRoux dit Cardinal, and
LeRoux dit Cardinal-Rousson. A 4th child, Jean Cardinal was born in 1683 and the
descendants of the family are known to have lived south of Montreal, upper state NY and
VT.
Also, St. Ledger is the name of a church in a town in either Montreal or Quebec. When you
do your research be sure to research the LeRoux and Rousson names as well.
There are many websites that have the genealogies of these two "Jean LeRoux" and
your Cardinal family probably goes back to one of them. Good Luck
