I'd be happy to contribute $20.00 toward this project.

Subject: [CARDEN-L] SPEEDWELL Project - note #2
TO: All on this list who are interested in the SPEEDWELL project
---
I have been in touch with the researchers mentioned by Arthur. One of
them has sent a good deal of detail about the way he works and seems to
be familiar with the relevant archives. He charges at a rate of US
$26.00 per hour, plus copies, etc., postage at cost, and travel
expense. For research in Greater London (includes PRO Kew), the rail
fare (which includes all travel within London between archives) is US
$18.50. This is always pro-rated on the basis of an 8 hour working
day, the proportion charged to include relevant inter-archive travel.
He says : "You will see I work in US$ and can accept $ checks. If you
would like me to carry out this work, could you please mail a check for
say two hours work to me?"
Arthur tells me that the charges and method of working seem OK.
I've only been able to communicate once with ALan Hogle (his wife Teddy
is a CARDEN researcher) -- as recommended by Arthur. They search
CARDEN records & visit London often from the U.S. Each time I've tried
contacting them since last week their email has bounced, except for the
first time...so, I'm stumped on that one for the time being. In order
to keep 'forging ahead' on this project, I'm alone in deciding which of
the two researchers to use. When in due course one of them is
commissioned, and he starts to work, I'll write a brief synopsis of the
work as it goes along. Since there's no point in paying for what we
already know to be true concerning the SPEEDWELL & the CARDEN who was
the haberdasher in London, I've written to the first person who told
the list of it (Bailey Francis) for the source of his information. He's
written me back with this note:
"The reference for that (SPEEDWELL) information is from 'Monroe
County, Tennessee Heritage, 1819-1997', p. 137, in an article entitled,
"544 - The CARDEN/CARDIN Family: A Pioneer Family in Monroe County,
Tennessee", by C. Dwayne Cardin, P. O. Box 759, Tellico Plains, TN
37385. There are no references at the end of the article, so I don't
know the source of his information. Ive never communicated with this
person, so I don't know if his address is still valid. I'm sure that
the other person wjp posted to the list got their information from this
same source...it'll be interesting to see."
If anyone knows more than this will you please let me know about it?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please, will everyone interested in contributing to the cost of this
research post a message to me -- guaranteeing to send me up to $20 each
on request? When I have received enough guarantees I'll spend up to
$100 of my own money, and then report progress and ask for cash (or
M.O.). Those contributing will each be sent a copy of whatever
documents are received.
Kindly Submitted, Martha Smith
