DEAR LISTERS interested in the SPEEDWELL topic...
First, thanks to all the folks here who' have already volunteered to help pay for any
research we may have done 'across the pond'... More is coming soon on that.
Right now contact is being made w/ several researchers in England and the most qualified (
also, most reasonable price) is being sought out. Progress reports will be forthcoming.
Kind Regards, Martha Smith

Elisa,
Perhaps you have another cousin or two in Tyler, Texas. I am one
of the Cardens of Tyler and we recently heard from another, the daughter
of Marseilles Carden. I called the number of the only Frame in the Tyler
phone directory and left a message. I'll let you know if I have made
contact with Caroline Frame. Maybe we have a Carden "clan" in Tyler!

Elisa,
Caroline and I had a chat, this morning, by telephone. As soon
as we get a "breather" in September, we'll try to get together and
compare notes. We have another Carden cousin, whose family moved west
from Alabama -- can you imagine three Carden family descendants in one
little East Texas town? Anyhow, we will try to arrange for the three of
us to meet and get acquainted. It sounds as if my line (Robert Franklin
Carden, Sr., from Benton County, Arkansas, and formerly from Coffee
County, Tennessee) may be a different branch from theirs, but it is
always interesting to try to find a common point of origin.
We'll be in touch when we have some new data to share.

Becky,
Robert and Charles Carden in Elbert county, Ga from about 1790's. They both
married daughters of one Moses J. Haynes Sr. Robert appears to be the oldest
brother as his wife Nancy was deceased when her father died abt. 1830. It's
evident that Moses Carden was named for Moses Haynes. Don't know if Moses J.
Carden was son of Robert or Charles but my money is on Charles. Charles is on
the 1830 census as being 50-60, his wife 40-50 and a male 20-30 which would
fit Moses (23).
Robert not shown on 1830.
On the 1840 census we see Moses J. Carden 30-40 (33), his wife 20-30, and
another male 60-70 which is probably Charles. It shows Moses as having a son
under 5, a daughter under 5, and a daughter 5-10. Don't have their names as
yet but I will keep searching. They are NOT on the 1850 Elbert Co. census.
Evidently, gone on to Hart county.

samples ? I find it interesting that theres also not much talk at all from
any Carden people that have submitted samples, either they just were forced
too do it or its not important enough!! I find most people are just going
along for the ride and not really wanting too find their roots, they really
want someone else too do all the work. Im wondering about this dna test now ,
call me a skeptic but i fear early signals tell me its just another way that
a firm makes money hoping Im wrong.. Richard

Arthur,
I have found a 3rd cousin of Thor's who is willing to do the test if we can
get the group rate of $99.00. His name is Robert Carden. You can see the
email below. What is the next step? Do you want to contact him with the
information?
Trish,
I would like to participate in the DNA research. Just let me know if you
guys get the group rate. Also just to let you know, I have three blood
brothers (and one adopted) and two sons of my own.

I have now heard that, for the time being, you cannot yourself apply
to
FTDNA
for a testing kit at the group price of $99 plus postage. I have to
apply
on
your behalf as Group Surname Administrator. The kit will come with
an
invoice, which you can return with your credit card number if you wish
(essential for non-USA people, to avoid currency exchange problems).
So please will everyone wanting a kit tell me, and remind me of their mail
address.
This is urgent. I leave for a three week sailing holiday on Thursday, so
if
you don't contact me by then you will have to wait until
September.

Richard, you cynic!
The answer to your first question appeared in a message which I posted on
July 3rd, part of which was as follows: I am considering whether I should
recommend that all future tests should be carried out by FamilyTreeDNA of the
USA rather than by Oxford Ancestors. This is partly because FTDNA have
reduced their prices and now charge a third less than does OA and partly
because they test 12 loci on the Y-chromosome instead of OA's 10 loci (nine
loci are the same for both organisations, so almost perfect comparisons can
be made with the twenty tests already carried out).
The answer to your second question can be found at
http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/00CardenDNAproject1.html
No one expects, I hope, that this DNA thing is a substitute for old fashioned
research. But it has already produced some amazing results and fascinating
insights. Nor is the use of the internet a substitute for old fashioned
research. I think it would be useful if you were to publish the result of
your old fashioned research on some web site or other (such as Trish's above)
instead of just posting criticisms .
Arthur
PS. I am leaving on Thursday morning (midnight Wednesday US time) for three
weeks sailing, so if you intend to reply to this please do so immediately or
in September!
