Mary Jane Carden, my great grandmother, had three brothers who served in
Lowry's Battery, VA Light Artillery, CSA. They were:
Allen A. Carden., enlisted as a cpl, June 8 1861. at Indian Creek. Present
thru final rollcall. Paroled in Charleston, June 12, 1865. Age 28, 5'10"
tall, blue eyes, light hair. He was living in Hinton WV in 1916.
Isaac Green Carden, enlisted June 8 1861 at Indian Creek. Present thru final
rollcall. Paroled in Charles June 12 1865. Age 24, 5'11" tall, dark eyes,
dark hair. He was living in Hinton in 1916.
John Mastin Carden, enlisted May 8 1863 at Indian Creek. Present thru final
roll. Paroled in Charleston June 12, 1865. Age 20, 6'0" tall, blue eyes,
light hair. He was living in Hinton in 1916.
I bought the book on Lowry's Battery. It was evidently a local company, with
many Monroe County members. I don't know where Indian Creek is -- evidently
in Monroe Co., VA.
The info. above is copied in the book from 'parole records.' Evidently all
CSA soldiers (and sailors) had to sign an oath of allegience to the USA
before they were paroled. At that time they noted the age and physical
characteristics of the soldier.
I think it's interesting that two of the brothers were fair, and one was
dark. They all seem to be unusually tall for the time.
If anyone wants me to look up a name I will be glad to do so. The book also
contains Bryan's and Chapman's Batteries of the Virginia Artillery (CSA).
