Hi Cathy,
Thanks for your note.
I guess I should state the names that I have of the 7
proposed sons of Robert James Carden (est.1705-1785)
of Goochland, VA. We've been over this topic a lot
on this list over the last few years, and not everyone
agrees, of course. Some may have other ideas, these
are only names that I've gleaned while trying to make my
own connections to my CARDEN's who came bf/ my 2 GR.
g.father JHR CARDEN (1821,AL-1899,AL).
BTW, Joseph is not a name that occurs in my own family
line that I can find, but it may in others here on the
list besides yourself :
In honor of our listmaster, Arthur CARDEN <s>, & for
the sake of simplicity, I'm going to use the "EN" sp.
for this surname here on. Any other sp. are, of course,
acceptable within their own families, as you use them.
As I said, I'm not trying to start a 'lively discussion'
about a useless argument concerning name spellings &
dates, but a concerted effort to find out real info.
concerning the origins of any and all CARDEN's (*of
ANY name sp.) in the Southern U.S, esp. in Alabama.
All sound research and worthwhile ideas on anyone's
CARDEN family lines in Alabama are desired.
A little known fact in other parts of the country is
that there were even some CARDEN's who migrated from
the American South to Brazil after the end of the War
Between the States, to escape the financial & economic
horrors of what they saw coming as Reconstruction
began to rear its ugly head. After the U.S. Presi-
dential Election of 1876 many of them returned, but
many did not. Estimates are about 50/50 for both alt-
ernatives. So, as well, I'm also looking for any desc-
endants of those "Confederados", as they're still called
in Brazil today. Most live near Buenos Aires & Ipanema.
============================================================
THE PROPOSED SONS OF ROBERT JAMES CARDEN (est.1705-1785) AND
HIS FIRST WIFE, her name is UNKNOWN at this time:
1. Robert James (James Robert) Carden, II (b.abt.1740) mar.
Mary Tuggle; then Elizabeth Robards
2. Reuben Henry Carden, Sr. (b.abt.1745) mar.
Ann Massie
3. John Carden, (IV?) (b.June 1746) mar.
Mary Snugs
4. Larkin Carden, Sr. (b.abt.1755) mar.
Jean Cason
5. Leonard Carden, Sr.
(b.abt.1755,VA; d.bef.1/23/1819,either SC/or TN) mar.
Catherine "Caty"
6. James B. Carden (*proposed?)
(b.abt.1756,VA; d.1842,Coffee Co,TN) mar.
- Some sources say: Elizabeth Fuller
- Other sources say: Sarah DePriest
[It's not known at this time if these women were in reality
married to 2 different James Carden's, or not. Some say yes,
some say no. Arguments for either view are equally compelling
to me. It's from one or the other of these men that my own
CARDEN line may descend, but IDK for sure bc/ the gaps bet.
1770-1820 leave several possibilites open for speculation.]
7. Jesse Carden (b.abt.170) I haven't got any more on him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The 8th son of this Robert James Carden was by his 2nd wife,
Phyllis Wilbanks. Other Wilbanks researchers tell me that this
is the proper sp. for their line as it separates from Woolbank(s).
Archer Carden (1773-aft.1810) obviously never left the Goochland,
VA area, and IDK what his children did. I think someone else on
this list is a descendant of his, so might be able to shed some
light on the issue.
One more point is that Robert James Carden (est.1705-1712)
was known to have several brothers. One was Ewing (Youen?)
Carden, some of whose descendants may have also come South
from VA. It would be interesting to hear about them as well.
LOTS MORE INFO. IS NEEDED... Martha

# 1- It's my belief from research, interviewing older Carden
relatives, reading family lore, etc. that came out of my
family, and what many of you have written, that ALL Carden's
who came to AL were from one of the 7 sons of Robert James
(James Robert?) Carden (b.abt.1705, Rappahannock Co,VA, &
d. abt.1785, Goochland Co, VA). The name of wife # 1 is not
known at this time. Later this same Robert James Carden
mar. 2nd to Phyllis Willbanks & they had several other
children, mostly all girls, and a boy (Archer).
I think that at various times after the American Revolution,
these 7 sons of Robert James Carden came alone, or brought
their families, to AL, after migrating to other states. All
the while keeping touch with each other over several gen.
in some fashion or other. Some of them (mine) migrated to
NC from VA, then to Spartanburg, SC, then to Laurens Co,SC
before coming to AL abt. the time of statehood (1819).
WIth some study it can be ascertained that there were many
well known & well travelled Indian trails at the time, which
later became white men's roads. These trails eventually
accessed some major tributary of the mighty TN river where
it curves down into the north west corner of GA.
My Carden ancestor is Joseph Carden, b. 1755 Botetourt Co., TN-1818, who
married Mary (abt. 1775). Their son Joseph W. Carden married Judith Kenner.
Their son Christopher Columbus Carden married Rebecca Kenner. Their son Hugh
Walker Cardon married Lula McSpadden. Their son Joseph Norman Cardon married
Willie Aquilla Smith. Their daughter Catherine Lucille Rose Cardon was my
mother.
Christopher Columbus Carden was born Hawkins County, TN and is buried in
Lebanon cemetery near Centre, AL where he and his family migrated from TN.
Hugh Walker Cardon was born at Monsburgh, Hawkins County, TN. He attended
Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN and studied law. He was one of the
first lawyers in the town of Centre, AL, where he migrated, along with his
father and mother, and is buried at the Garrett/Cardon cemetery in Centre,
AL. He is the first one known to use the "Cardon" spelling of the name in
this line. He married Lula McSpadden 10-15-1876.
Because of the Kenner connection, we have a good deal of supporting
information regarding this lineage.
How does Joseph Carden connect to your supposition that Robert James Carden
is the beginning of all the Carden lines?? All the researchers we've talked
with and information we've come across so far indicate that Joseph came here
from England, but we have not been able to make the link 'across the pond'
as yet. We would love to have some supporting evidence that Joseph is
connected....in fact, anything about his ancestry would be much appreciated!
I look forward to hearing from some of the list members regarding this.
Sounds like a merry time of exchanging emails is at hand :)
Regards
Cathy Thompson
