Hi Steve,
Thanks for your input into the Alabama CARDEN origins
discussion. We want and encourage it, for sure.
Like I said, it's my own 'educated guesses' that bring
several of us on the list to the conclusion that all,
or most, Carden's in AL at one time or another were
from the same family line. Actualy we've tried to
establish (without much 'proven' success so far) that
the origins of Robert James Carden (est.1705-1785)
were originally from the same one or two related
immigrant Cardens who came South (in the U.S.), but
it's not set in stone by any means, as you and Carol
have already mentioned. I don't mean to disregard the
var. Carden surname spellings here either, bc/ in
America I think that they have some significant familial
differences at times for that particular family's own
reasons. However it's really easy to get caught up in
that thought pattern and then get lost in the morass
of data bc/ there's as yet no established constant
(pattern) for these particular spelling differences.
I think that because it's been a topic of thought for
so long on this list, and that it still has had no
real resolution, is why Arthur suggested the method of
attacking the problem that he did in order to make a
more organized effort to at least establish some sort
of outline of thoughts & facts along those lines.
In doing so we may be able to connect more of those
'loose ends' that many of us have without 'beating the
subject to death' in the process <s>.
As for the North Carolina Cardens coming to AL, BYO
their trek thru GA, it certainly seems plausible that
there's a VA connection at some time before that.
Trish's generous offer of allowing us to post definite
info. to her site is certainly wonderful. What do you think?
Have I rambled on enough now...? <s>
MARTHA

Subject: not all Alabama CARDENs
I don't think ALL Alabama CARDENs are descendants of your Robert James
CARDEN; specifically, I don't think William and Randolph CARDEN of 1850
Russell Co AL were descendants.
It has been said in the past (Russell Co Heritage Book) that William,
Randolph, and a Benjamin CARDEN were brothers who came to Russell Co AL
from Jasper Co GA. Best evidence suggests that William and Randolph
were indeed brothers, but that Benjamin was not really associated with
them at all. i
William and Randolph were great-grandsons of the William CARDEN who died
in Wake Co NC before 1777. Now was he related to Robert James ...
perhaps a brother? Maybe.

# 1- It's my belief from research, interviewing older Carden
relatives, reading family lore, etc. that came out of my
family, and what many of you have written, that ALL Carden's
who came to AL were from one of the 7 sons of Robert James
(James Robert?) Carden (b.abt.1705, Rappahannock Co,VA, &
d. abt.1785, Goochland Co, VA). The name of wife # 1 is not
known at this time. Later this same Robert James Carden
mar. 2nd to Phyllis Willbanks & they had several other
children, mostly all girls, and a boy (Archer).
