Every Saturday our newspaper has a local history column entitled "Tales from
the past". Recently the story concerned the Lyceum, one of Liverpool's
grand listed buildings, which was formerly a library and gentleman's club,
mainly frequented by moneyed merchants. In the summer of the 1880s a
group of gentlemen were gathered there, discussing a curious incident which
had deeply affected one of them concerning a ghostly apparition. Among
this gathering (all named) was a Captain Carden of the Coldstream Guards.
Sadly no first name given, but not very likely one of our County Mayo
Cardens. I cannot find any reference to him in Liverpool, but perhaps
Arthur (hello) may have him listed.
Incidentally, Agatha Christie seemed quite fond of the name Carden. She used
it in two of her books for minor characters, and I came across it again as
part of an address whilst playing a computer game of one of her
stories - Evil Under the Sun. Can't wait to get back and find out
whodunit!
Best wishes to all,
Lynn Bateman in Liverpool, Merseyside.

I wonder if he is an ancestor of mine.
Among our Carden History is a couple of annecdotes. One was that my
Grandfathers' sister made her present know just after her death by standing
at the foot of a relative's bed. Since Captain Carden was in the Military,
maybe he is related to our branch since we have a military family history.
Come to think of it. There is a story that my mother who passed in 1981, had
a premonition of her death, so ghostly doings run in our branch of the
Carden family.
Another anecdote about another sister is that she was a spinster and a cat
lover and when she died her cats tried to pull the sheet off her body. Not
an apparition but weird anyway.
