Art,
In the 1930 Census is says Orelan and Nell lived on Branch Ave in Tampa, FL.
My Great Grandmother Ella Burnel Carden-Hayes lived at 302 E. Oak Ave Tampa,
FL which was just south on Hwy 275 or South on North Florida Ave by 3-4
miles.
In 1930 Burnel lived with her daughter Lucille Hayes-Krause (age 21) and her
youngest daughter Estelle Hayes (age 15). Did your family have contact
with them? I was wondering since Rufus is 10 years older than Burnel and I
would think as siblings they may have gotten together since they lived so
close? My Great Grandmother lived until 1962, I wasn't even born until
1968.
Do you know anything about Burnel's family? Any family photo's or
information you'd be willing to share would be treasured.
I haven't done anything with the c. 1926 photo, it's a 2"x3" and it has
some
light damage, everyone but Polk and Bessie are viewable. You still can
barely make out Polk and Bessie's faces. I don't know if scanning it on the
printer will damage it more so I haven't made any copies of it.
Leland thought I should contact G. B. Carden in Jacksboro, TN. Stating that
"he may have information and possibly some pictures since he retains all
that was in my grand-father's house (his father)" Is G. B. another Goldman
Benton?
Thanks for you help on this!
Sarah Hayes

Subject: [CARDEN] Barbara & Leland Response - distant cousins!
Would love to see this pix.
I am son of
Orelan Ralph Carden & Nell Waters Carden - the Tampa Florida connection.
My Grandfather is Rufus Hayes Carden and my Grandmother is Cora Hill
They are buried in my home town of Tampa Florida, having lived there when
they moved from LaFollette Tennessee when my dad
Orelan Ralph Carden was a young man. Rufus Hayes & Cora Hill - are
actually buried at Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Tampa Florida in plots my parents
originally purchased.
Rufus Hayes Carden Jr. is my Uncle-I never realized he was truly a JR, I
think they had dropped the Hayes later on.
He died in Atlanta/Stone Mountain Georgia area and is buried there...close
to residence of his immediate family (his daughter June Carden Gunter.)
Irene is my aunt. She lived in Florida and then the Denver area for many
years. Believe she was the one with the gypsy spirit in our side of the
family.
Other children of Rufus Hayes Carden & Cora Hill-
Earl Carden - Died in a VA hospital in Georgia from wounds and Army
accident which originally occurred in WWII.
Kenneth Carden -the baby-was always sickly -died in Tampa Florida, lived
with my parents for many years. I am not aweare of his medical problems.
Believe William Goldman Carden is my great-grandfather. I need to check my
files....but I believe I found his tombstone in a Baptist Church graveyard
near LaFollette Tennessee. The minister there was very helpful...the
graveyard was full of Carden gravestones.
.
My father Orelan Ralph Carden was born in LaFollette Tennessee to Rufus
Carden and Cora Hill Carden. That side of the Carden family left Tennessee
in like 1910-?- for Florida because Cora Hill was sick with asthma/breathing
difficulties and her MD (was supposed to have been a Carden kin) advised
them to go to Florida. They ended up settling in Tampa Florida...my
hometown. Rufus my grandfather was a watchmaker/jeweler ....something
passed down to him by his father...?...Uncle Rufus also owned a jewelry
store in Atlanta for many years. My parents cared for both Orelan's
dad-Rufus Hayes and Cora Hill in Tampa before they passed.
I enjoy very much touching base here again with my long lost family members!
Funny note- while visiting in Tennessee several years ago, everywhere I went
in the LaFollette / Knoxville ....I asked about Cardens ....and people would
say "Oh my word....you aren't a Carden are you?" Seems the family is
still
very well known there. There is a mural on the wall of a post office there
that is labeled the "Carden Farm" ..appears some were big landowners
there...much of what was known as the Carden Farm is now a big
industrial/business park along a river there.....Carden's worked for the
railroad & later TVA....were MD's....ministers...and I heard some
interesting stories.
Sorry for the wordiness....but love touching base with distant relatives now
and then!!

Barbara...
This is info I sent to Sarah Hayes regarding the picture taken in 1926.
The picture you have is of Uncle William Polk Carden and Aunt Bessie
Massengill Carden and some of their children, who were:
Willie R (Bill) (06 Dec 1907)
Andy J (02 Jan 1910)
Bedford (27 Apr 1912)
Mary Lou ( 15 Aug 1914)
Ola (18 Feb 1918) (This is most likely
Uncle Polk's daughter, not Aunt Burnel's.)
Later Anna Lou was born (15 Jun 1932)
(She still lives in the Polk Carden homeplace in
Caryville, TN)
I am assuming that the "Ruff" (Rufus Hayes Carden, Jr.) and Irene are
children of Uncle Rufus Hayes Carden (28 Feb 1886 - 15 Jan 1929), who was
married to Cora Hill.
FYI... William Polk Carden and Rufus Hayes Carden were brothers to my
grandfather, Goldman Benton Carden (1869-1941). William Goldman Carden is
my great-grandfather.
Leland Thornburg Carden, Jr.
