This is very interesting. I'm wondering if some of your Cardens are descended from
the Carden that my Carden ancestors took in after the Civil War. His name was Jim. I have
a will that list 5 slaves but not their names.
As an aside. I, myself am an AF Veternan
ruth

I know quite a bit about the Black Cardens since I am one. My ancestry apparently
originated in Halifax County VA. The Descendents of John Carden included both Black
Cardens that apparently descended from a son, James. My DNA is an exact match with most
of the Virginia Cardens. There are also many Black Cardens still in the area of Scottsburg
VA, some descended from the same son and some decended from John's 21 plus slaves
freed after the Civil War. I have a copy of his will that list the slaves' names and
their monetaary value. Tbese black Cardens now residing in the area are the only ones,
other than my immediate family, I have ever met. I having travelled all over the world as
an AF Air Crew member. Most live on Dryburg Road in Scottsburg not far from the Carden
Cemetery. Most others with which I have corresponded are usually related to someone from
this area.
