Crawley Brothers Charged with the Killing of Carden
Together with Unknown Party - Verdict of Coroner's Jury Which Investigated
Killing.
O.R. and J. M. Crawley and an unknown party are charged with the killing
of
William M. Carden
By a Pike county coroner's jury which impanelled yesterday and
investigated
the killing.
Carden was shot down Friday afternoon on the roadside, just below Orchard
Hill, while on his way to Milner, the shots coming, it is alleged from a
buggy
in which three men were riding. The story of the killing was
published
yesterday morning in this paper.
The supposed motive for the killing is of long standing, Carden, while
marshal
at Milner three years ago, having killed one of the Crawley
brothers.
While the shooting seems not so much of a surprise to the people of Pike,
it
has caused considerable excitement. The killing of their brother was
keenly
felt and resented, it is said, by the Crawley family, and as time
passed,
according to friends of all concerned, the bitterness increased.
The Messrs. Crawley, who are charged with the killing by the coroner's
verdict, are both residents of Griffin and are engaged in business here,
and
there is no one here but who regrets the trouble they have gotten
into.
Sheriff Miller Harrison, of Pike, arrived in Griffin last night on the
6:45
Central train from the scene of the coroner's inquest and stated
that the
verdict was to the effect that the killing was murder and that Reg and Jim
Crawley were charged with the killing by the jury. He stated that the
Crawleys had not been arrested, but that he would make an effort to locate
them.
The "unknown party" in the case is known and a warrant has been issued for
his
arrest.
Governor Offers Reward
Sheriff Harrison stated that the governor of Georgia had notified him that
he
would immediately offer a suitable reward for the arrest and
conviction of
each of the following parties:
"Jim Crawley, age 34 or 35, red complected, about 5 feet, 8 inches high,
weight about 150 pounds, almost entirely bald-headed, hair dark.
"Reg Crawley, age 25 or 26, light complected, weight about 150, about 5
feet
10 or 11 inches high, round face, light hair, one hand badly cut,
scar
very
noticeable.
"Both wanted for murder."
Crawley Claim They Were Justifiable
While the Messrs. Crawley could not be seen, a News and Sun reporter
learns
from reliable sources that they claim self-defense and that they
were
justifiable in what they did. It is said that they believed that Carden,
whom
they met in the road, threw one of his hands in his hip pocket and
one in
his
side pocket and with a vile epithet remarked that "now he had
them." The
Crawleys, it is claimed, knew the old grudge which Carden had against
them,
and thinking that they were going to be killed, it was but natural
that
they
should protect themselves. It is said that Messrs. Crawley will
surrender
at
the proper time and be ready to stand trail to the charge which has
been
brought against them. The News and Sun does give these statements for
facts,
but they are rumors and are given for what they are worth. It
remains for
this case to be tried in the courts on its merits before the true facts
can
possible be brought out.
Sheriff Harrison spent last night in Griffin at work upon the case and
will go
to his home at Zebulon this morning.
