This William M. Carden b. 3/26/1848 m. Millie A. Connell 9/12/1869 had 2
daughters Kitty and Lola. I have a son listed for Millie but am not positive
it is her son. It may be a younger brother. Anyhow, William is son of
Christopher Bailey Carden and Willie Parker. Christopher is son of David
who is son of John that came from Virginia to Georgia. I didn't have any of
the information about the murder or trial.
Thanks,
Mike

Pike County Farmer Brutally Murdered
William Carden Shot Down on Roadside From Buggy in Which Three Men Were
Riding.
Walking along the roadside on the way to Milner to attend a Masonic
meeting,
William M. Carden was shot and instantly killed yesterday afternoon
in
Pike
county, the shooting being done from a buggy in which three men were
riding.
The killing occurred just below Orchard Hill, in front of the Old
Pete
Moore
place, and is surrounded in mystery, nobody knowing who fired the
shot
which
caused Carden's death.
E. E. Futral and son, M. T. Crumley and a negro, who were picking cotton
several hundred years away, heard the shots and saw Carden fall, but none
of
them recognized the men in the buggy. It is said that after Carden
fell
one
of the men, wearing a military uniform, jumped out of the buggy and
going
near
the prostrate man fired another bullet into his body.
A News and Sun reporter, in company with Sheriff Phelps, Policeman Archer
and
J. P. Nichols, went to the scene of the killing in Mr. Nichols'
automobile,
but no further particulars could be learned. At that time the
sheriff and
coroner of Pike had been notified of the killing, but had not reached the
dead
man's house, where he was carried in a car by Dr. C. H. Griffith
shortly
after
being killed.
Carden was 63 years of age, and is survived by a wife and daughter.
Three years ago, while serving as Marshal of Milner he shot and killed
Virgil
Crawley. He was very well thought of in Pike county, where he had
resided
for
many years.
The people of Pike county seem to regret the killing of Carden, but there
was
little excitement caused by the killing.
