from all the census records i have been able to find on my Reuben, says that he was born
in S.C................so i looked up some S.C.
census records to see which Carden male was in the Spartanberg district
1790 Dist 96
L-85....Leonard Carden
1 free white male over 16
4 free white males under 16
4 free white females
3 slaves
1800 census......Leonard Carden......again the only Carden listed
1 free white under 10
1 free white 10-16
2 free white males 16-26
1 free white male 45 and up
1 free white female under 10
1 free white female 10-16
1 free white female 16-26
1 free white female 26-45
5 slaves
1810 census.........C635.....184
John Carden
Jordan Carden
Larkin Carden
Leonard Carden
the way i figure it my Reuben would have been born between 1810/15
by 1820/30 there were no Carden men listed in the Spartanberg Co. dist.

most of the children in my line are named James, Leonard, Reuben and John and at least 1
Andrew.
my gg-grandpa John Carden did have 1 son named Robert L.
according to the 1840 Polk County Tn. census....the family is listed this way
1 white male 20-29...........Reuben
1 white male 5-9................John
1 white male under 5.........
then 1 white female 20-29.......Rachel
1 white female 5-9....................Sarah A.
1 white female under 5..............Tabitha
i would say that the 1 white male under 5 was Lenard.....but according to the 1850 census,
he was just 8 yrs. old in 1850.....so if this is correct....then he would not have been
born in 1840.
so the family list 7 members in 1840, 9 members in 1850, 4 of those under the age of
10.....so who was the child under 5 in 1840 ?
by 1860 Sarah and Tabitha had married and left home. leaving John, Lenard, James K.P. ,
Martha A.D., and Malinda at home.

I have always thought that Leonard Carden, who is reported as being the son of Robert
Carden and Elizabeth Robards/Roberts, is really a son of John Carden of North Carolina.
You might want to investigate that. My reasons are based on the naming of his children,
and the fact that there is no son of his named Robert.
