Chicago Irish Families, 1875-1925
Carden, John, President of the Gambrinus Brewing Co., died Oct. 6 at his
residence, 457 Dayton St. after a few days illness. He was born in Ireland
in 1832 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1851. After five years residing in New
York he came to Chicago and engaged in the malting business. In 1880 he
became associated with H. V. Bemis in the Bemis & Carden Malting Co. In 1897
the concern sold out to the malting trust and Mr. Carden became connected
with the Gambrinus Co. He leaves a widow and five children: John Jr., James,
and David H. Carden, and Mrs. M. J. Buckley and Mrs. S. D. Mace. The funeral
occurred from St. Vincent's Church where Mr. Carden attended for a number of
years and of which he was a generous benefactor. Burial Calvary. -Oct. 17,
