Lynn Bateman writes: "Apparently the Jones' were originally named Kritschgau
and it was George who changed their name to Jones on his marriage to Emily
Edith Carden." Why didn't he change it to Carden, I wonder? Who wants to be
called Jones?
Here are three examples of people changing their names to Carden:
Gustav John Hessanauer changed his name to John Carden in about 1915 to
enable him to join the British army as a chaplain. Poor fellow, he was
murdered in Cairo in 1943, as those on this list a year ago will know. He
left no offspring.
Chris Carden of Kent, England wrote that his grandfather born John William
Viscardini or Viscardine changed his name to Carden in the 1920s to escape
family troubles, and was subsequently bigamously married in 1925 and there
are hundreds of 'new' Cardens as a result.
Someone called Schramm changed his name to Carden in Manchester, England in
about 1950 with the help of his solicitor Robert Samuel Carden of the Rigsby
branch. I have no other information about him.
Are these people (and their descendants) "real" Cardens? I treat them as
such. What do listers think? Any other examples?
