Message Board Post:
Thomas Francis Carden was born 9 April 1871 in Carbondale, PA) to James Carden, an Irish
immigrant coal miner and Mary Barrett, a Carbondale native.
Thomas married Mary Hanley about 1899 and had 5 children I know of:
Matthew Hanley Carden (born abt 1900)
Mary Carden (born about 1902)
Barbara Carden (born about 1903
James Carden (born about 1905
Thomas Carden (born in 1906 and died as an infant in 1907)
In 1900 Thomas was at his father James' home at 40 Scott St. in Carbondale with his
1 year old son Matthew when the census was taken, but may have been living in Mayfield, PA
(a small town boardering the south of Carbondale). I have not found Mary in that census.
In 1902 Thomas bought the family home on Scott St. from his father James for $1.00,
just 6 weeks before James died.
Mary Hanley died in Scranton, PA on March 30, 1908.
In 1910 Thomas and his 4 children were living on Scott St. in Carbondale. Thomas was
working in the coal mines as a laborer.
By 1920 Thomas and his 2 sons had moved to Detroit and were living together in a hotel
at 151 Bagley Avenue where Thomas worked as an oiler.
I have not found Thomas in the 1930 census.
By November of 1945 Thomas had moved back to Mayfield, PA when he died.
I hope this helps your research a bit. Thomas is my great-grand uncle, the brother of
my great-grandfather Patrick Carden.
