Hello to all the Cardens. I am still trying to find the source of Carden
as my middle name, and I have come up with the following. It is a bit of a
tangle but it may lead to the Templemore Carden's. I would be very pleased
if someone has information which may help.
All births, marriages, deaths below were in Rode, Somerset.
Thomas Whitaker married Ann xxx bef 1739. Daughter Sally Whitaker, b 1739.
Thomas Noad married Joanna Smith in 1736. There was an adopted son,
Jonathon Miller, who took the name Noad when Thomas died in 1760, and
carried on the family business [two wool mills at Rode]. The ancestry of
Jonathon Miller is unknown.
Jonathon Noad [Miller] married Sally Whitaker. Thomas Whitaker also had
more than one wool mill in the area.
Jonathon and Sally offspring:
Sally Wheeler Noad married James Collins [of Hemington, near Rode].
Humphrey Minchin Noad married Maria Hunn [poss dau of PM George Canning's
wife].
Sally and James had a son Thomas Collins, b 1790, who lived in Australia.
His eldest son was named James Carden Collins, b 1827. He used Carden for
a number of his children and it continues to be used today - I am David
Carden Collins. Thomas also had a son Humphrey Minchin Robert Graeme
Collins [!]. He went to the USA later and no offspring is known.
Humphrey Minchin Noad and Maria had a son George Henry Carden Noad, and he
had a son Charles Humphrey Carden Noad.
While not certain, it seems both Carden and Minchin come from The Whitaker
connection. I have two Noad lines descended from a Thomas Noad of
Wolverton, [choice of three Wolvertons, Bucks, Hants, Warks], in the 1600s
and there is no use of those names anywhere. Two children [at least] of
Sally Noad, nee Whitaker, used the names.
I recently received a number of pages of information on the Cardens of
Templemore tree. On the very first page is one John Carden who married
Rebecca Minchin in 1717. They had a child [son?] Minchin.
The combination of a fairly uncommon name, Carden, with a very uncommon
name, Minchin, leads me to think that the Templemore Carden's may be the
origin of my name. Does anyone have a connection between the offspring of
John Carden and Rebecca Minchin [John, Minchin and Paul], and Henry
Whitaker and Ann xxx who lived in the Rode area of Somerset certainly from
about 1700 onwards?
The other names associated with this lot are Collins and Wheeler. James
Collins' two sisters both married Wheelers, and Jonathon [Miller] Noad's
step sisters both married Wheelers.
I thank you very much for any assistance.
Best regards,
Dave Collins
