Dale -
It is a shame you cannot participate in our DNA project, as I doubt that you
know any male Carden descendants of your great grandfather. But you will see
from Trish's site at
http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/00CardenDNAproject1.html that at least two
descendants of John Carden b: Abt 1655 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
d: Abt 1739 in Essex County, Virginia are participants in our project, and
are distant cousins of yours. Several of them have commissioned a
professional in England to find out more about the John Carden (Curdon) b:
Abt 1613 in England. You could ask Martha Smith about that (<A

daddyrayone(a)yahoo.com</A>)
One would have to dig one's ancestors up to be certain about their DNA, but
if one has enough samples from descendants one can make a very good guess.
As regards CORMACK, I find that there are only 11 people of that name on the
voting list in England, and if you like I will give you their details so that
you can try writing to them. I suspect it is an Irish name, and they may be
immigrants to England.
I think you would find running a Carmack DNA project very interesting and
rewarding. The group rates are very much lower than the individual ones in
your email. Send a query to info(a)familytreedna.com for particulars. Start
off with the basic 12-marker Y-chromosome test ($99) for everyone. FTDNA
keep the samples under refrigeration, so an upgrade to 25-markers is possible
later.
I suggest you also look at Chris Pomery's wonderful DNA portal at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html where you can
find a huge amount of information on this whole DNA thing.
I have sent a copy of this, including the family information below, to the
CARDEN list at Rootsweb, and I hope you don't mind! [Listers - Dave Cormack
(dcarmack(a)gmpexpress.net) contacted me through Trish after finding her site
in a google search for Cardin.]
