Has anyone found information on what Clan the Scottish Carden line (this
would be the ancestors of David M. Carden (1792-1878 Veteran of War of
1812)) who came to "the colonies" -Goochland Co VA, in the 1600's?
I know through DNA testing from relatives that this particular Carden line
(my ancestors) were orginally of the Scottish Cardens.
From my understanding of history, the Scotts Carden's were
"peers" and
Carden name was originally Celtic and was Anglicanized at some
point before
the 1500's or during that time. I also know Carden Tower is somewhere
outside of Edinbugh, Scotland.
My understanding is the Irish Carden line came to the US in the 1800's...
and that some of the African American Carden's adopted the name Carden from
their "masters" (yes, some Carden's- including David M. Carden- were slave
holders according to the 1850 slave census-- I have the docs attached to my
tree if anyone wants them-- certainly not a proud part of the family history
but a part)...
But, back to the original question- Does anyone know which Scots Clan we
decend from?

I too am descended from Scottish Cardens At least my grandfather said that
we are Scots/Irish. I have never been able to prove it though. I have been
able to go back to approximately 1750 William and Dicey Carden and would
love to find out more. Such as when we arrived and from where.

Maybe Arthur Carden could tell you although I don't remember reading
anything about them in his books.?
However, my stepmother is from Elgin, Scotland and she says there is a
Carden Farm and other establishments in that area in her memory.

Ireland ...LOL
i am descended from Leonard Carden who married Tabitha Peace and then

Yeah I'm descended from Leonard too, so I guess we're distant cousins.? I've
always felt such an affinity for anything Scottish so I think we may have
been mixed at some point.? My grandfather was a mason which I don't know
much about but the sight of those guys in their garb aligned on a hillside
behind the cemetary when paw paw died and the bagpipes playing was like
right out of the movies.

I was just reading all your comments on the Cardens and thought I would add
my two cents worth. I am descended from James J., Carden (1756, Goochland,
VA) who was married to Elizabeth Fuller. He would have been Leonard's uncle,
brother to Robert.
