I really wish I did have a male Carden heir in my family, but alas, my great
grandmother Mary Marilda Carden came from a family of six girls and two
boys, both boys of whom died in the fifties. I know they had a few sons but
I have never met any of them. As for dates on James and Elizabeth, I do have
some . James and Elizabeth were married Jan. 20, 1784 in Granville Co., NC,
and Sarah DePriest and a "James Carden" were married on Nov. 28, 1782 in
Powhatan Co., VA. James was born in 1756, Goochland Co., VA and died in
1842, Coffee Co., TN As far as dates go, I don't have any more than that on
him. I have Elizabeth as being born 1763 in Granville Co., NC and died about
1830, Coffee Co. TN. I wish we could solve this mystery, too. I am just
seeking the truth. James and Elizabeth are my direct line down to my grt
grandmother. I descend from their son, Robert Franklin Carden, and his son,
William Lewis Carden. I have a copy of William Lewis Carden's obituary but
it only mentions immediate family members. If you run across any new info,
please send it my way and I will do likewise. Thank you for responding.
I'm hoping that between all of us Carden searchers out there, we're bound to
come up with some answers somewhere LOL!
Jeannie

Subject: [CARDEN] Two wives of James J. Carden
Hello Jeannie,
You wrote:
... I have a Joseph W. Carden, married to Judith Kenner. There has
been some debate over where this family fits in, but supposedly, his
parents are James J. Carden (my gggg grandfather) and his first wife,
Sarah DePriest. I have no proof of this however.

Like you say over the years, there's been a mystery concerning the
wife/wives of your James J. Carden.
So far as I know, it's never been firmly established by dates & records
that he was married to both the Fuller AND the DePriest ladies. Most
reserachers have info. that leads to either one or the other, but conflict
over his possible marriage to both. Even though I may be connected to
this part of the Carden line, there isn't real proof of it yet. There are
those more closely related to this part of the Robert Carden, 1705-1785,
Goochland Co, VA than I am, like Elisa for one. So, I'm not trying to
'argue' about it at all, just trying to gather more facts, if possible.
That said, I'm in hopes that you have some answers needed. Do you have
any definite dates for your James J. Carden and either of his (two?)
wives -
like Birth, Marriage & Death dates? Some think that this question exists
because there are TWO different Carden men involved in this mystery,
not just one man who mar. to two different women.
Didn't your Carden family live near the border of VA & NC at one time?
Specifically Orange Co, NC ?
It might be helpful if you have a male in your Carden line who is a
provable
descendant of James J. Carden & Elizabeth Fuller, or Sarah DePriest, who
would be willing to have his DNA tested, if that hasn't already been done.
The resulting info. has helped many who post here determine which 'branch'
of the Carden ancestral heritage they belong to on a mostly accurate
basis.
Just some ideas,
Martha in AL
