Thank you Steve for responding. This gives much food for thought and will
act as a catalyst for further research. I appreciate the time it took you

Subject: [CARDEN-L] Randolph CARDEN of Russell Co
There is now little doubt in my mind that Randolph CARDEN of Russell Co
AL is the son of James CARDEN and Elizabeth TILLER.
From the 1850 census record we see children Samuel age 15, James age
13,
and Mary age 10; all born in Georgia.
The 1840 census of Randolph CARDEN in Meriwether Co GA, page 120 line
21, shows one male age 0-5, that would be James; one male age 5-10, that
would be Samule; and one male age 20-30; that would be Randolph. Also,
1 female 0-5 (Mary) and one female 20-30 (Elizabeth).
Immediately below Randolph CARDEN, on line 22, is James CARDEN. This
household shows two males age 15-20, 1 male age 20-30, and one male age
50-60. Also, one female 0-5 and one female 40-50. From the 1850 and
1860 census records of Meriwether Co we can identify the younger males
as Elisha born 1828, Martin born 1826, and Charles born 1816. There are
some discrepancies with the ages, but I believe they can be ignored.
I'm not sure about the female age 0-5. The 1850 census shows a girl
Sarah FOLDS, age 13, in the household, but no indication how she is
related. In 1840 there is a FOLDS household next door. Marriage
records of Meriwether Co show that in 1846 an Elizabeth CARDEN married a
William RUFF. Who was she? Possibly she was the widow of James, except
that she shows up in the 1850 census as still Elizabeth CARDEN. If she
was a daughter of James, which I consider most likely, she is either
mis-bracketed in 1840, not in the 1840 household, or married awfully
young.
In a previous message I said that James CARDEN married Elizabeth TILLERY
in Oglethorpe Co. I have since learned that it was actually Elizabeth
TILLER he married. There were both TILLERs and TILLERYs in early
Oglethorpe Co.
Elizabeth TILLER was the daughter of John TILLER whose estate was settled
in 1840. Part of the settlement papers show
"No. 6th Received this the Eighteenth day of January Eighteen hundred &
forty of Martin Tiller Executor of the last will & testament of John Tiller
senior of Oglethorpe County deceased the sum of Five hundred & fifty one
dollars & 33 1/4 cents in full of a legacy in right of my wife Elizabeth
it being bequeathed to her in & by the last will and testament of the said
John Tiller Senior
James Carden
Test
Elisha Smith
Elizabeth was one of twelve, possibly thirteen, children. Brothers
included the above mentioned Martin and ones named Elisha, and Randolph!
Is the James CARDEN of 1840 Meriwether Co the same as the James CARDEN of
1830 Jasper Co? I think yes.
In the 1830 census we have two males age 5-10, two males age 10-15, one
male age 15-20, and one male age 40-50. With a little bit of slack
these five younger males are William, Randolph, Charles, Martin, and
Elisha. Maybe. There's also a William CARDEN over in Talbot Co that I
suspect might be our William, which would mean some other unknown male
in the 1830 household of James.
The females in James' household are one age 0-5 and one age 5-10. I'm
clueless about who they might be, though one of them might be the
Elizabeth who married in Meriwether Co. Then there are females age
20-30 and females age 40-50. The female age 40-50 is Elizabeth and
presumably the female 20-30 is a daughter.
I think James' mother is still alive, but where is she? On page 268 of
Oglethorpe Co Deed Book HH, dated 1789, is a deed that starts out
"Carden, William and wife Dicey ..." Then in the 1827 lottery a Dicy
CARDEN, blind, of Jasper Co is a fortunate drawer. She then turned
around and sold the land to James CARDEN. Moving forward a bit to the
1832 Cherokee land lottery, once again a Dicy CARDEN is a fortunate
drawer, this time as a widow in Walton Co. Is this the same Dicey?
Probably. But who is she living with in Walton Co?
That's it for now
Steve
