Jim,
Thank you for your willingness to help with this. The current
site is written in Cold Fusion. It won't work on a CGI-bin site
unless it is also Cold Fusion capable. All the search programs
would have to be re-written (no small task) if the new site does
not support Cold Fusion. Please ask your ISP if they can support
Allaire's Cold Fusion and if so how much it would cost.
As far as the SQL it is no big deal if you have worked with some
other database query language. If not, you might find the
learning curve a little steep.
Thanks,
Thor

Your friendly listowner here. Some of you know I do professional
web-design
work as well as my "proper" job as a pc network engineer. I have
an ISP here
in Tulsa OK that I am very happy with (I use him for a local
online stoe).
He will charge $20/month with no setup, and give us total control
of the
CGI-bin etc, with 20+ meg to work with. I can do the website
maintenance
with no problem, but the SQL would be a learning experience. The
URL
purchase is $70, and that covers us for 2 years with $35 a year
after that.
Thor has been a great help to the list, and his work on the
databases is
phenomenal.
Bat the idea around and let's come up with something good.

Subject: [CARDEN-L] Good News _ Bad News
All,
The good news is I am returning to school this fall. I am
getting a Masters of Education and a teaching certificate.
Then
while I'm earning a doctorate I am going to teach high
school.
Once I have my doctorate I am going to return to college and
teach teachers to teach.
The bad news is I am going to have no money or time for the
Carden search engine web site at
http://www.tcarden.com/tree/carden/. I know this comes at a
particularly bad time since the Carden home page at
http://www.dakodadesigns.com/carden.htm seems to be off line
right now.
I suggest you buy a $30 a month, Cold Fusion capable, web
site to
park the information and buy a URL such as
http://www.cardenfamily.com which seems to be open. Set up
for
the URL is about $75 and set up for a new website is about
$75 if
you get it from
Advances.com where we are now. I can handle
the
set up arrangements if you like.
Please let me know if there is another technical type out
there
that would like to be the web master. Any one who knows
HTML and
has worked with SQL queries with any kind of database is
qualified to be the webmaster. (Cold Fusion is just SQL and
HTML
put together) They'll need to purchase a book on Cold
Fusion for
about $60 written by Ben Forta. A $350 piece of software
called
Cold Fusion Studio would be helpful for them but is not
necessary. If you don't understand this paragraph you are
not
the new webmaster.
I am going to keep my current
www.tcarden.com website for my
wife
and daughter-and-law to use but I am going to get the
Carden, Foy
and Augustine stuff off of it so we can cut the monthly
charges
in half. I will, of course, put a link on there to the new
Carden website if ya'll decide you would like one.
I will be glad to help migrate the information and get the
new
site fixed up as well as answer occasional questions from
the new
web master. Someone needs to step forward and say, "Yes,
I'll
take financial responsibilty. Here is my credit card
number.
Charge the new site to me." Someone else (or the same
person)
needs to say, "Yes, I'll be the webmaster." (See
qualifications
above.)
If I don't get both these answers from someone by September
1st
the Carden search engine website will go away by October
1st.
I'm sorry if this seems abrupt but Belmont University for
whom I
have been doing web work lately wanted to hire me part time
and I
worked out this deal with them which has been in the back of
my
mind for some time.
Thanks,
Thor
