This info. isn't 'set in stone' but does come from a source outside the
Carden family line... so, let's see if the following info. agrees w/
what anyone else here has.
I hope it helps someone --

Robert James (James Robert?) Carden/in, b. bet. 1700-1705, Fauquier
City, Rappahannock Co,VA - d. 1785, Goochland Co,VA
This Robert Carden must've had TWO wives - one before Phyllis
Woolbank/Wilbank(s), but her name is unk.
According to Robert Wilbanks [a prominent researcher for that family,
also including the sp. of the name as Woolbank(s)] Phyllis Wilbanks /
Woolbank(s) was born abt.1740; and was the mother of Robert Carden's
last five children only - these, inc. Archer Carden and 4 girls.
Phyllis was not old enough to have borne any of his older children
except for the 2 younger sons - James (1756-8) & Jesse (1760), but
that's not probable.
Robert's will may be found in the VIRGINIA STATE LIBRARY, Richmond.
It reads as follows:
In the Name of God, Amen.
I, Robert Carden of Goochland County and the Parish of James Northam
being sick of body but of sound and perfect sense and memory thanks to
the Almighty God for the same and knowing the uncertainty of this life
and that it is afforded for all men once to die, do make, constitute and
appoint this my last will and testament in the manner and form following
to wit:
Imprimis my will and desire is that all my lawful debts should be paid
the first convenient opportunity after my decease. Then my will and
desire is that all my estate real and personal I lend to my beloved wife
Phillis (Wilbank) during her natural life of widowhood.
After her marriage or decease my will and desire is that all my estate,
real and personal, be equally divided amongst all my children share and
share alike to wit. John, Molley, Reuben, Larkin, Robert, Dicey, James,
Jesse, Leonard, Sally, Pattey, Archer, to have an equal share with each
other.
Lastly I constitute and appoint my Beloved Wife Phyllis
(Wilbank)...(and) Robert Carden, James Carden, Reuben Carden, Executors
to this my Last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have here unto
let my hand and affixed my seal this fourth day of January one thousand
seven hundred and eighty five (1/4/1785).
Signed sealed published and delivered in presence of:
John Salmon

SOME OTHER FACTS ABOUT ROBERT CARDEN :
(1) Most researchers place (this) Robert as the son of John Carden and
Mary Ann Parker, and place Robert's birth date as abt. 1700-1702, and
Robert's first child being born 1742-1745. His last child, Archer was
born in 1773. This would make Robert about 40 years old when his first
child was born and at least 70 years old when his last child was born.
(2) Robert's land was probably located on upper Little Lickinghole Creek
near Three Chop Road in Goochland County. The creek and the road are
easily located today.
(3) Robert, being too old to fight in the Revolution, subscribed to a
voluntary contribution to the commander of the militia in Powhatan
County (1777) to help pay bounties to able bodied men who would
volunteer to serve in the Virginia Continental Line.
(4) All of Robert's children listed herein are mentioned in his will
except Betty, who died at the age of eleven (1774) ; and Fannie who died
as a baby in 1771.
