Chuck. That is terrible, and I am not able to help directly.
I know many people, including myself, who have got most, if not all, their
info from defunct hard drives. The police are usually able to find someone
who can recover all deleted files from hard drives. Suggest you don't toss
what ever failed but find first if your info can be recovered - I would be
surprised if there was not someone in your area who does that
professionally.
When I upgraded a couple of years ago I included a CD writer - I burn a new
CD every month without fail. It only takes a few minutes because it stores
every personal file I have with great space to spare. At under a dollar US
to do it is excellent, even if CDs over 6 months old become coffee coasters.
But, look for an expert first - your time is irreplaceable.
Best wishes, Dave.

Subject: [CARDEN-L] HELP!!!!
I had a total system crash and lost everything that I had collected over
the last 15 years. I had copies of everything on separate drives
(3copies) of everything but that didn't help. If I have sent any files
to anyone, I would appreciate it if you would send me copies of what
ever I sent. If anyone has my info on their web sites let me know the
address.
Thanks in advance,
Chuck Carden
