David the baker of Westminster
Stephanie Winnetts asked 24.6.01 for information about John Carden a baker in
Westminster, whose daughter Hannah married Henry Brigden 14 March 1848. I
forwarded her query to Joan H Carden of Spain, who has wonderful records of
Carden birth marriage and death registrations and Carden wills.
JHC writes: No Hannah Carden marriage was registered in E&W in 1848. A
Hannah Carden marriage was reg Westminster March Qtr 1847 (1 351). Suggest
the certif is obtained so an address is known to enable a search to be made
in the 1841 and 1851 census returns. John Carden might turn out to be a
brother of David Carden the baker of Clapham (see below).
David the baker of Clapham.
David Carden (who died 1875) married (1) Rebecca Dod 25 Aug 1822 at St
Michael, Paternoster Row, London City, issue Elizabeth 1823, Rebecca 1824
(bapt 5 Sept 1824), James 1829, Sophia 1832 (all bapt Holy Trinity, Clapham).
Rebecca's death reg June Qtr 1855, Wandsworth ia 259. David married (2)
Louisa Titchenor 19 Aug 1858 at St-Martins-in-the-Fields. Her death reg Sept
Qtr 1875 Wandsworth 1a aged 80.
Louisa Carden, a baker, and her step-daughter Rebecca appear in Clapham in
the 1881 census.
David to the best of my knowledge came from Warwickshire. He died 26 July
1875 at 61 Old Town, Clapham in county Surrey, baker. Probate 29 Nov 1887 at
Principal Registry by Rebecca Carden, spinster, the daughter, surviving
executrix. It looks as if Rebecca wasn't going to let her father's property
go to her step-mother! Rebecca's death reg Sept Qtr 1899 Wandsworth, stated
age 74. I may get the 1858 marriage certif to satisfy my curiosity.
