I just received the April 2001 issue of "Tennessee Ancestors", a
publication of the East Tennessee Historical Society. There is a
reprinting of an obituary from the Knoxville Sentinel, 27 November 1914.
JEFFERSON CITY. Nov. 27 - The funeral of Samuel R. CARDEN took place
Wednesday afternoon at his late residence three miles east of town.
<clip> The deceased was born 75 years ago in Rogersville, and came to this
county when a very small boy and had lived at the place where he died ever
since. <clip> He was a gallant survivor of the "lost cause". He joined
the dashing cavalry officer, Col. ASHBY, and followed Gen. Joe WHEELER
more than four long years sharing every victory and defeat of his
campaign. <clip> The deceased was never married but lived for his last
eight years with his great nephew and namesake, Samuel Carden HENDRICKS.
<clip> His parents originally located in Hawkins County from Virginia, and
knew and were friends of President JACKSON. The mother lived to be nearly
100 years of age, and only died a few years ago at the old CARDEN
homestead. The deceased was first cousin to the late R. E. L. and Ralph
MOUNTCASTLE, of Knoxville.
Anyone recognize him and/or know from which line he descends, as I do not
have him in my file.

Bailey, and everyone else, also.
I have a write up about his mother if anyone is interested.
