Subject: RE: [CARDEN-L] Some Confusion about two John CARDENs?
Bailey,
Sorry, I can't help with the problem. However, I don't think the Reuben you
have listed as a son of John ( born 1731 and no wife listed) could have
been
the father. Reuben and Stacy Bowen's marriage was dated 1 Jan
1793, and
John
Carden, father of Reuben, gave his consent. This, I assume, means
Reuben
was
born some time after 1772, not 1760 as you have, or 1756 as I have
listed.
Of course, John, born 1731, could have had children as young as Reuben,
since we don't know how many children he had. According to my notes the
started being born on a regular basis in 1752.
I am including my notes on John, born 1731, from Branch Carden, a long time
Carden researcher that I received quite a few years ago. I hope it helps
and
someone out there can shed more light on this subject.
Chuck
(PS: I have always thought John, born 1731, was the father of the Leonard
that married Tabitha Peace and was in So. Carolina before going to Monroe
County, TN. Sure would like to have that straightened out also.)
1. John1 CARDEN, born 1731 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, son of David
CARDEN. He married unknown.
Notes for John CARDEN
There is a John Carden Sr. listed on a "Poll List for Mecklenburg Co., on
14
April 1777. Also there is a John Carden (Estate) listed for 1787, not
tithable, but having 2 horses and 9 cattle.
According to Branch Carden, this John was born around 1731 in Mecklenburg
County, VA. The name of his wife and his death is unknown.
The vestry book of St. James parish indicates that he was a member of that
parish and a tither in 1764.
He owned land in Mecklenburg. There are two early deeds on record. One
dated
1760 in which Seth Moore of the County of Lunenburg sold to John
Carden of
the same county, 250 acres in Lunenburg County, bounded on one side by
Henry
Tally and on the other sides by branches. Said deed recorded May 6,
1760 in
deed book 6, pages 59 and 60. On October 10, 1764 Seth Moore of the County
of Lunenburg sold to John Carden of the same county 200 acres in Lunenburg
County on the Long Branch of Allen's Creek. Said deed recorded Oct 11, 1764
in deed book 8, pages 362-364. Allen's Creek is located in present day
Mecklenburg County which County was cut off from Lunenburg. John married
about 1750. Correspondence with the clerks of court of Lunenburg and
Mecklenburg failed to turn up his will. However, the indices of deeds and
marriages in Mecklenburg County reveal some information about his children.
I do not know exactly how many children he had but the census of 1783
counted him as head of a household of 8 people.
Of his children, I have information on five of them:
John, Jr. born around 1752.
Leonard, born around 1754.
Reuben, born around 1756. (IF this is his correct date of birth, he was
over
100 when he died in the Poor House in Orange County, NC)
Robert, born around 1758.
Mary, born around 1760.
None of these children remained in Mecklenburg County for long after their
marriage. The census records of 1830 and 1850 do not show any members of
the
family remaining in the County.
Children of John CARDEN were as follows:
2 i John2 CARDEN (Jr.), born abt 1752 in, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia.
John
Carden was listed on a "Poll List" on 14 April 1777. A John
Carden, Jr. was
head of a household of 5 people in Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1783. A John
Carden, Jr. was listed on the 1787 tax roll for Mecklenburg Co., VA having
1
black under 16, 3 horses and 6 cattle, and a female Negro, Milly. See
notes
from Branch Carden under his father's name.
3 ii Leonard2 CARDEN, born abt 1754 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Leonard Carden was head of a household of 5 people and 1 slave in
Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1783.
4 iii Robert2 CARDEN, born 1760/65 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia; died
before 1850 in Tennessee. It is doubtful that this is the Robert that
married Lockey Hunt, as he would have been between 22 and 27 years old if
the date of his birth is correct. He would not have needed his father's
consent. This Robert's marriage bond to Lockey Hunt is dated 4 Jan 1787,
with consent of John Carden, father of Robert; Consent of Wm. Hunt, father
of Lockey. Joel Moore was the surety. Leonard & John Carden were witnesses.
See Marriage Records 1765-1810, Mecklenburg Co., VA. (DPL G929.3755M466el)
There is no Robert & John Carden on the 1795 Mecklenburg Co., VA tax list.
There is a James Carden & a Robert Carden on the 1800 Census, Granville
Co.,
NC.
5 iv Mary2 CARDEN, born 1760 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Mary Carden
is named in the will of John Keeton, Sr., Mecklenburg County, father of her
husband.
