Hugh Walker Carden/Cardon
Hugh (b.1849 d.1903 m.Lula McSpadden b.1856 d.1931 son of Christopher
Columbus Carden and Rebecca Kenner) was born a Carden, and at some point in
his life, he decided to swap the "e" for an "o". We, as of yet, have
*no*
idea why he did this.

Having some 700 individuals in my FTW database devoted to Cardens of

Kent, England, I naturally have a fair sprinkling of derivations including
Cardins,Cardons, Kerwins and Carwardens etc. But I must confess I have
never been quite convinced that the Carwardens belong on our tree.
Until recently, that is; for a few weeks ago a fellow Carden researcher
(Tessa Hart of Whitstable) found a copy of a document written by a 13th
century monk named Carwarden at the Minster (Isle of Sheppey, Kent). And
in it he penned his own name in the shortened version C'arden.
I am now convinced. But would be pleased to know if any of you out there
in cyber-gen know of earlier uses of the apostrophe. Or indeed, have
evidence of initial usage of any derivation of the family name.
Ron Carden, Ashford, Kent, England.
