When I was training with the RN in the late 1950s at HMS
Collingwood, near
Fareham, Hampshire, I often used the Gosport - Portsmouth ferry. Close to
the ferry was a shop owned by Cardens. I think it was a fish and chip shop
but cannot be sure.
Unfortunately I had no real interest in the name at that time, even though
it is my middle name, and I never approached them.
There was no sign of the name there when I re-visited Gosport in 1989.

Thanks, Dave. I will add your information to my "Miscellaneous Cardens"
file, which already includes the following:
DENNIS CARDEN. Asked for Register in 1969, no other info. Perhaps the
Dennis who was born in 1931, reg Barrow in Furness. Perhaps the Dennis
Carden who was a Chief Petty Officer at RNH Haslar and left the navy about
1970 and may have gone to Australia. Joan Carden of Spain believes he
descends from Brian Carden, married Dec Qtr 1856.
