Thanks for the numbers, Steve. That's absolutely interesting
and bears out what I originally thought- that TN & AL had the
highest Carden pop. density in 1850.
Even considering the different spellings of the surname, the
1880 results for Wisconsin still puzzled me though. That was
totally unexpected, just as the Utah results for the 1990.

Subject: population density of CARDENs
Absolutely no guarantees to accuracy, but I show that in 1850 the six
states with the most CARDENs were
1) TN 173
2) AL 88
3) KY 81
4) VA 79
5) NC 72
6) GA 69
All these states had roughly 1 million people so the density of CARDENs
is about the same. The only state that snuck in when figuring density
was Arkansas because of its relatively small population. Ranking of
states by density of CARDENs per million people shows:
1) TN 173
2) AL 114
3) AR 110
4) NC 83
5) KY 82
6) GA 76
7) VA 71
Note: This was counting men, women, and children; not just households.

I don't believe it, martha! In 1850 the only states with a
significant
density of Cardens were Kentucky and Georgia! (Not absolutely sure
about Kentucky - my atlas is not handy and never having been there I
may have got the shape wrong).
