This is getting interesting, Chuck. I have been working on the Robert
CARDEN family from the 1830 and 1840 Grainger County, TN, censuses. I think
this is the same family that was in the 1810 census for Stokes County, NC,
and possibly the 1800 census for Granville County, NC. Several of the
children of the Robert CARDEN of Grainger County migrated to Anderson
County, TN. There is one older male child, born 1787-1794, based on the
census age ranges, for whom I have been unable to account. As previously
mentioned, there was an Armstead CARDEN family with the presumed head of
household in the 50-60 age bracket in the 1840 census for Anderson County,
TN. I had wondered if he might be the unknown presumed oldest child of the
Robert CARDEN and wife of Grainger County, TN. What makes it more
intriguing is that your information states that he was born in Mecklenburg
County, VA. This lends further speculation that the Robert CARDEN of
Grainger County may have been the Robert CARDEN, b. 1763, in Mecklenburg
County, VA, son of John CARDEN, b. 1731, rather than the Robert CARDEN, b.
abt. 1742 in Goochland County, VA, whose wives were Mary TUGGLE and
Elizabeth ROBARDS.
I confess that this is pure speculation on my part and is simply fodder for
additional research.

This one's interesting...
Does anyone on the list have (or know of) an Armstead (sp.?) Carden who
might've been in Anderson Co,TN in 1840 and in Iowa as an old man in the
house of his daughter (Sarah) and son in law Samuel Brooks by 1870?

Hi Bailey,
Here's a little info. on an Armsted (sp.) Carden living in the household of
Samuel Brooks & Sarah (Carden?) Brooks:
1870, Census Douglas, Madison Co, Iowa
Dwelling # 26
Samuel Brooks, 60 (b.abt.1810), Ohio, Farmer
Sarah Brooks, 56 (b.abt.1814), Ohio, Keeps house
Stephen Brooks, 11 (b.abt.1859), Iowa
Armsted Carden, 82 (b.abt.1788), VA, farmer, can't write
Maybe this is one of those whose name you've seen in VA.
He must've moved to Ohio bf/ 1814 as Sarah was b. there.
Wonder if he's the same one you found on the 1840 in TN?
I'll CC: this to the list to see if anyone else knows of them...
Martha
Hi, Martha, first my wife is a LYON descendant. She is a descendant
of
Sophia LYON, b. 3 March 1788 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co, CT, d. 1880 in
Niles, Berrien Co, MI. She married Edward COLLINS, a son of Revolutionary
War soldier, William Lock COLLINS of Stratford, Fairfield Co, CT. All
that
we know of Sophia's ancestry is from "Lyon Memorial, Volume
III, New York
Families Descended from the immigrant, Thomas LYON, of Rye". Her parents
were Shubal LYON and Sarah MEAD. Have you seen the three volumes of the
Lyon Memorial series? They are online at HeritageQuest Online and
probably
in Ancestry.com's online books as well.
Second, regarding the Armistead CARDEN family in the 1840 census for
Anderson County, TN, it is as follows:
Armstead CARDEN 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 1 - 4 1 2 1 0 1
Translated, there are 3 males in the 10-15 age bracket and one male in the
50-60 bracket. There are 4 females 0-5, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 1
female 15-20, and 1 female 30-40. The three males in the 10-15 age
bracket
would have been born between 1825 and 1830 if they were correctly
categorized.
I have never been able to find a known descendant of this family.

Hi Bailey,
Thanks for your note about Armistead Carden. That's very interesting
and thought provoking.
My JHR Carden was born in Greene Co,AL 5/4/1821 to Polly Lyon Carden
who was born bet. 1794/5 in Laurens Co,SC. Her parents John & Sophia
(Teague) Lyon's families had lived there since before the Revolution.
They were on their way to AL from SC due to the lure of cheap, good land
in
AL Terr. that was beginning to open up by
1815orso.ManycametoAL
(really in MS Terr. until 1818) from the Carolinas during that time.
Family
legend has it that Polly was travelling with her family and others
when
she
met Mr. Carden in TN (maybe Lawrence Co., AL) in 1816. Her first
child
was
Stacey, b. 10/4/1817 in TN (or Lawrence Co,AL). Supposedly her
Carden
husband was a 'carney' or 'travelling circus' worker whose father had
immigrated from Wales to England, was a 'down on his luck' Shakespearean
actor who had brought Polly's husband with him from England when a young
boy, intending to return later after he had settled the boy with some
relatives to get his wife and 2 daughters back in England.
There's no real proof of this story, but as in all family legends there
might be a grain of truth somewhere. It was when I heard the 'Speedwell'
story for the
first time that I thought there might be something to the ole' family
legend
after all. Then we couldn't really prove that John Carden came
on the
'Speedwell' in 1735 w/ his young son Robert...so now, IDK what to think.
The rest of the legend states that the Carden immigrant father left his
young son with relatives in either NC or SC, and went back to England to
get
the rest of his family. However, the ship sank and the young Carden
(who
is
supposed to have married my Polly Lyon) was left more or less an
orphan.
He's supposed to have been raised by the relatives (in NC or SC) and later
came with some of them to AL.
Some, or all, of that's a real 'reach' and if there's any truth to it, I
DO
think that the family legend is off by 50 or 60 years.
Your Carden son with no name on that census w/ the Armistead Carden family
might bear some more checking out.
