Yes, Arthur, I too thought it odd that GA & KY were the
most prominent states of residence for Cardens in 1850.
I would've thought TN & GA might win that one.
The 1880 seemed even stranger, with Wisconsin named
as the state most densely populated by Carden's!
Oh well, the site says its data was taken from the
actual census totals themselves. Some Southern states
just didn't have that large a pop. early on. Maybe this
was taken into account when tallies were made.
Did you ck. out the locations for other spellings of the
name, i.e.- CARDIN, CARDON, etc.
That was interesting too...

I don't believe it, martha! In 1850 the only states with a significant
density of Cardens were Kentucky and Georgia! (Not absolutely sure
about
Kentucky - my atlas is not handy and never having been there I may have
got
the shape wrong).

U.S. names locator. pretty NEAT !
Just go to this site and type in a family name (I used several sp.
var.
of CARDEN).
Select 'DISPLAY ALL YEARS', and hit the ENTER key.
It's not a perfect process, but is interesting in that it's
interactive
over the span
of time bet. 1850-1990. When you've selected the surname to use, the
screen
changes abt. every 5 sec. according to when the selected surname was
most
prominently in use in the U.S. Census.
